Re: looks like a plasma gone bad

If this is a VS-8087 it does not have a plasma. it has CRT's filled with glycol though. have a technician look at it. i have parts for this unit.

Orange tint too screen

To know what is wrong do a simple test almost anyone can do

Model listed has three picture tubes, with rear cover removed turn set on and look into the three lens, each should have a picture--one red, one green and one blue.

If any one of the three look like a floodlight you have bad glycol in that tube.

This will not be a do it yourself repair, The liquid is toxic and like antifreeze to keep the face of each tube cool.

Do not attempt to take the lens of the affected tube apart, that can be fatal to you and the set.

Let me know what you find and I can give you options.

My mitsubishi vs 6047 has been in unheated storage for about 4 years. now picture is very blury. when words are on screen large letters are legible with small white horizontal lines dancing side to side....

Does the picture look like this?

If so I believe your CRT liquid coolant has gone bad and needs replaced.
How to diagnose bad CRT Coolant:

Note: This problem will only affect the GREEN and BLUE picture tubes. The RED CRT is never affected, because the wavelength of the red light does not promote this algae growth
General Symptoms: Washed out, blurry picture, red portions mostly OK, GREEN images have halos, BLUE portions of images may have halos or be missing entirely.Turn the color level control all of the way down and remove the screen and/or the cabinet that contains the mirror. (different for different models) Do not turn the set off or the color level control will reset to preset levels. Look directly into the picture tube lens while the set is on. First look at the RED CRT. Observe the scan lines in the picture. These same lines should also be present in the green and blue picture tubes.
After looking at the RED CRT for comparison, look into the GREEN or BLUE CRTs. If it is contaminated, it will look like there is a layer of film that you have to look thru to see the picture. There may also be swirls and other various contaminates forming. If it is not as clear and sharp as the RED CRT, it is contaminated, and you should change the coolant fluid. IF you wish to tackle this I will supply more information and instructions. This task is medium to hard for non trained people.
Let me know if you wish to get the instructions on changing the fluid.

Looks like it is out of convergence but the center or the picture looks fine I thought maybe pincushion or horizontal width problem

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The picture on ours is extremely dim. dunno if it is because of its age, but it is considerably more dim than other projection tvs i've seen. is there a fix?

These tvs have 3 picture tube that have a coolant (liquid gel) filled into these tubes. Over the time this liquid goes bad specially in philips tv and becomes clouded that make the picture dim and a little foggy with colors. This requires specialized professional help. WE do these repairs in sacramento & yolo county CA areas. The repair can cost $ 150 to $ 220. If colors are real bad with 3d kind of look, the convergence may be bad too. both combined should cost less than $ 350. Check out mor answers and estimates at

The picture on the tv is curved in the middle sides if the screen how do i fix it to where the picture fills the whole screen?

Their are pincushion circuits the compensate for inward curvature. It is common for solder connections to break on the pincushion transformers or the connections where the transformer wire is wrapped around the connector pin. Careful inspection under a magnifying glass while manipulating the pin sometime will show hairline cracks in the solder. Their are also adjustments on the convergence board that will compensate. The adjustment potentiometers on the convergence board also have shown to be prone to solder cracking on the PC board

no lamp in this set. in the menu turn off the auto format feature. with the remote use the format button to put the set in the 16 by 9 format..if that doesn't fix the problem you probably have a pincushion problem.

Pincushion Picture on a big TV screen!!!

The set has 3 IC's(one for each color)strictly dedicated for the aligment of each color,if one them does not align is because is going bad or is already bad becuase picture can not be adjusted, the IC's can be identify because they are mounted on a heat sink and have the markings STK--- ---,they are all the same and need to be replaced with an exact replacement. If you are familiar with tv service you can replace them, sometimes the new ones need to be aligned from the service menu, you will need the service manual, soldering and unsoldering will be involved,If you are not too familiar be safe and seek the assistance of a servicer.
