Is this XP or Vista? Do you have a XP cd?

Boot the cd and see if you get a response when you use the keyboard or touchpad.

If you do, try a XP repair:

When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP.

At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair.

This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software

Hmm try to reconnect the ribbon cable to you keyboard and pointer but both is bad. it is probably a broken MOBO or motherboard
no worth fixing. if that data worries you then find a computer that can read that harddrive and use that one instead.

Dtrl, Alt Del is a windows command. If it has not loaded windows, nothing will happen when you press that combination. Try rebooting and press F8 just before it boots to run repair.

Keyboard unresponsive only 5's on screen

Sounds like your keyboard has been hijacked by a virus. Try booting into safe mode and see if the keyboard acts the same way. Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn itback on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFEMODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will lookdifferent to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this isnormal. If it is ok in safe mode then run your virus scan.

We have a new Acer Aspire one and the mouse is frozen. When I try to turn off the unit nothing happens. How do I free the unit or turn off everything?

As this was posted a month ago, I'm presuming you've solved the problem?
However, when your laptop locks up completely, the mouse won't move and the keyboard is unresponsive (press the caps lock key and see if the caps lock LED comes on or off?)
Press and HOLD the power button for a few seconds until the laptop powers off, Wait a few seconds and then power it on again, the computer may moan that it wasn't shut down correctly, but this is normal (because you couldn't shut down correctly)

hi,

Try the below steps:

Shutdown the computer and Restart it, as soon as it restarts keep on tapping F8 key, now select, "Last Good Known Configuration" and hit "Enter" key. It should take care of the issue. If not, then boot the computer to "Safemode", to do so, restart the computer and as soon as it restarts keep on tapping F8 key, now select "Safemode" from the Advance boot menu. If it is booting to Safemode, then perfomr a system restore to previous date. If nothing happens, then you have to perfomr a full system restore.

Unresponsive keyboard

Replace the keyboard. They're readily available on ebay. Also, try plugging a usb keyboard in & see if it still happens. If it does then forget replacing the keyboard. Instead you'll be needing a motherboard.

Hp pavilion entertainment pc no cursor at log in page; keyboard unresponsive.

First verify you keyboard works.

The easiest way to do this is to hit F1 when you see the HP logo.

This shouild take you into setup (bios)

If it lets you in hit F10 and exit BIOS.

Reboot.

Press F8 BEFORE windows starts to load.

Select safe mode.

Once in windows run a system restore.

To access System Restore, go to Start and select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then System Restore.

Restore your system to a time when it was working correctly.

I need your help!!

Hey Ian: Shut the system down. Start it up again and as soon as you see something on the screen start hitting the F8 button for a few seconds. You should see a screen with a list of selections on it. Use your arrow keys to highlight SAFE MODE. Then hit enter. If it boots fully into safe mode see if your mouse works. See if your virus program will run and do complete scan. Then do a system restore. You do this by clicking start>click programs>click accessories>click system tools>click system restore. Choose a date about three days before you noticed any problems. If this fixed your problem please rate as fixed. If still couldn't use mouse or need furter help just add a comment and I'll be glad to help. Thanks.
