This is a very common problem with nVidia geforce 8400 and 8600 cards. Serach google with this "Defective Nvidia geforce card" and you will see lots of user facing same problem in HP, Dell etc..
I too have an Hp laptop with nvidia geforce 8400. I have faced similar
problems(screen got divided into 8 parts) in past for 3 times. Every
time I have to replace my motherboard at HP service center.... It is
caused by overheating of laptop that destroys the nvidia graphic card. Go to the service Center and ask for a motherboard replacement. hope this will help.....
I wouldnt know whether you just like ATI Graphics cards, or it was recommended for you. But I would still give you my straight forward advice, and this is : Go for NVIDIA Ge-FORCE graphics cards. Trust me, you would thank me for it later. I didnt want to recommend a specific model for you though, because of our difference in country locations, but just try and get a high memory (like 256MB and above), NVidia Graphics card that is compatible with your system. Also check out the available slot on your system that you will use for it first before you go (So that you wont go and get an AGP slot card when you have just an open PCI Slot). I'm telling you this because I've used A LOT of graphics cards also (Over 10 years now)! and I've come to that conclusion that NVIDIA makes the best graphics card. Hope this helps you out. Goodluck!
The best place to purchase the Nvidia GeForce Go 7800 for a Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 laptop is eBay. If available on eBay, the price could range from $230-$300 and search for "Dell 9400 video" or the card name. Some eBay sellers will give you a $50 or so credit, if you purchase a card from them. The video card can be downgraded (ATI Mobility Radeon® X1400 HyperMemory)
or upgraded (NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS or GTX). Also, you can try parts-people.com, but they're typically more expensive and reliable.
Yes, the video card can be repaired in most cases. Search eBay for Nvidia GeForce Go 7800 repairs.
Only solution is to upgrade your video card. ATI Radeon 1650 pro 512 mb card is available in an agp format. This card is probably the best out there for an agp board. All you would need to do is purchase the new card, remove old card, insert new, reboot & use the cd that comes with the new card to install drivers. Hope this helps & please rate my answer fixya. Thanks.
I already sent an explanation to the two gentlemen who tried to help, expressing my appreciation for their efforts and telling them how the problem was solved. I contacted Technical Service for XPS desktops at Dell. After taking control of my computer and checking everything out, the tech rep said that the problem of the single beep that was repeated once every 60 seconds, did not originate with my computer. He suggested that I might possibly need to buy a new Back Up UPS, so I purchased one for $99.00 from Best Buy. My son-in-law, who is an electrician, came over and plugged everything into the new Back Up UPS and the beeping stopped right away. Thank you for this follow-up, as well as the people who took the time to try to help.
NVidia 8400GS PCI card is a pretty good card that isn't oversized, and the best thing is that all computers have a PCI slot so you shouldn't have problems with fitting/compatability. They're in any electronic store like best buy, etc. I had that card and played WoW/warhammer very well on it.
well, alot of factors come into play. First get an ATI 9700, ther less than hundred now, get it from a Computer store that actually has staff that know about computers, dont go to best buy or someplace like that, they only stock the better more expensive ones.
Make sure you get the right one, I.E. AGP or PCI, whichever one your PC is. The graphics card will make your P.C. run better when it comes to rendering graphics so you will see improvement on Games in the way of smoothness and detail. Picture viewing and editing will improve.
If you dont know anything about computers, or enough to get the right hardware, then find an Altek computer store or a comp USA or some kind of store that deals mostly with computers. take your whole unit and go in with it and ask a rep, say, " I need a Video card that fits this machine that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of this program. Take the program box with you also.
Be prepared for them trying to sell you more than you need, get something thats better than the minimum requirements for the program so that way your sure to not have performanc issues.
