Question about Televison & Video

Open Question

Hi, We have a Panasonic DMR-ES20D DVD recorder. We use it mainly for recording programmes we have saved on our sky plus box. It is connected to the sky plus box by scart cable into the AV2 scart connection on the recorder. It has worked fine for quite a while now but it now has a problem. You can start the recording from the sky plus box and all is well for either about ten, fifteen or twenty minutes. Afyer that it stops recording! I've now wasted dozens of discs trying to get this right. You can record from the built in freeview tuner for as long as you want. Any ideas?

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: Total lock up

The reason your dvd recorder keeps self checking is because there is a faulty regulator on the power board.

I have listed full instructions on how to fix this, but you will need to be able to use a soldering iron and exercise care. Alternatively you may be able to pass the instructions to someone who can repair it for you.

Do not listen to anyone telling you the laser is faulty, DVD drive unit is kaput, it requires firmware, software or any other useless upgrade, or that Panasonic will do it for the price of a small car! It is easy to fix..

I won't repeat the instructions here but if you look at my profile and search my DMR E55 solutions you will find it.

The regulator gets very hot during normal operation and it will eventually fail on all DMR E55s after a couple of years or so.
It was probably on its last legs and when you put the lead back in, you probably didn't disconnect the plug from your power socket and this caused a power surge which has finally killed it.
If you know what you're doing it's an easy fix.
It definitely does not need a software reboot.

I would be reluctant to use it again until it has been fixed because if the regulator overheats further, it could short circuit and cause other components to fail which would make the repair more difficult.

To check to see if there is a disc inside, unplug the unit from the mains, remove the two large silver screws, one on each side, then the three black screws on the back of the lid which can then be easily removed.
Next, remove the four small phillips screws that hold the top cover on the dvd drive. This is a large black plastic cover in the middle of the unit. The cover can then be taken off and disc removed if there is one inside. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE. replace the cover and screws, then repair the unit.
