Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My Sanyo microwave oven is six months old. The turntable has stopped rotating smoothly. Its motion has suddenly become jerky and noisy at the same time. I have given it to the vendor who sold it to me, for repair. Is it a major fault? I wonder why a brand new oven developed such a s problem. Babul

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty, as long as the problem is not due to grease or liquid spilled down into the motor.

Personally, I would replace the Microwave. It is bound to be below specification by now if it has been used quite a bit.
Then you will know you will be fine for a few years.

Approximately 1 month old? Should still be under warranty. Before doing anything else, contact the store where you purchased the oven and see if they'll exchange it as defective. If not, they may take the unit in for service there. Failing that, check your owner's manual to see what to do for service.

first check the roller under the turntable is correctly seated if so pull the drive coupling out from inside the oven and check for damage. If all of the above are OK you will need a replacenet turntable motor

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

If yours won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

In some cases, cleaning them helps. Lubrication is not recommended.

SANYO EM-D9550. Turntable turns when off but not when cooking.

That's sounds pretty strange!

Since I don't have any service data on Sanyos, I'd have to speculate.

I would guess that one scenario that could cause it would be if the turntable were turned off via the control panel, but there was a switch or switch mount problem.

I would refer you to their support people:

Noisy turntable

I has this problem with a Sears unit. The repairman simply removed the glass tray, cleaned all the wheels and the 3 toothed driver wheel in the middle and it became quiet. He explained that if any buildup keeps the plate from properly seating on the gear, it gets very noisy.
