Its not meant to be done by an amateur but you can follow the directions on this website to remove an unwanted password in the EEPROM:

Its above most people's skills set, even most laptop techs. Its really not meant to be done. If you want to mail it to me I could do it.

IBM thinkpad T41 -> get

Hi,

The IBM Thinkpad has a very strong security system.

If you are seeing a lock symbol when booting then somebody has set the supervisor password. If you can't remember it or guess it (try "password", "admin", "pass", etc) then you need to find the person that set the supervisor password.

Once the supervisor password is set the T41 is very well protected and it can't be reset by removing the laptop battery or CMOS battery.

There is a way to read the password from the protection chip but this is very complicated and requires taking the laptop apart and building your own chip reader.

The instructions for doing this are are:

Hope this helps,

Chris

My laptop IBM 2652 is locked .A padlock appears at top left of screen.I would appreciate help in unlocking and returning it to factory settings. My user guide is lost.

The Thinkpad is locked with a Power On Password and its purpose is to prevent unauthorized access to the laptop..
This password is set from the BIOS configuration.
Removing the BIOS battery to set the BIOS back to the factory default will not remove the password because it is stored on an EEPROM chip on the motherboard.
There is a way to remove this password, but it requires electronic knowledge and soldering skills. Please click on this link and follow my instructions.

Locked r30 diplays locked symbol can't do a thing

Does this laptop belong to you or you purchased it? If so you need to contact that person for the password or ask for a refund.

This ThinkPad laptop has a Power on Password. This password is enabled to prevent unauthorized access to this laptop.
This password is configured from the BIOS and is stored on an EEPROM chip (ATMEL 24RF08) and removing the BIOS battery to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults will not remove this password.

There are no backdoor passwords available. IBM state the fix is a replacement motherboard.

My IBM thinkpad A31 is locked. How to Unlocked?

only way is to send it into IBM as they have to replace the chip. that is if its bios locked. if its admin locked for windows xp you will need software to bypass or reset the administrator password

My notebook is locked

In order to unlock an IBM laptop, another PC has to be connected via a cable and adapter and some wiring done to read the security chip on the motherboard, then a software is used to retrieve the password. IBM says this cannot be done - however it is possible using the correct wiring connection and software. Occasionally on some models the password can be erased by using a jumper on the motherboard. IBM usually has 3 levels of password, power-on, machine access and hard drive.

Password lossed

try starting the machine in safe mode. (tap the "F8" key while booting, and select safe mode.) When the welcome screen comes up, there is often a user called Administrator and it most often does not have a password. If you don't use the welcome screen type "Administrator" in the user name box and click OK without a password.
Failing that, you can use a boot disc such as "UBCD4Win"(google it) to start up the machine and use one of the pass word tools to either change the password or create a new user with a new password. Then when you restart the machine normally, you should be able to log on.
