    Thanks skone,

Let me tell u the exact problem is that this notebook is only comaptible with windows vista and when u insert the (RedHat)linux AS v4 disc it ask for the drivers, i have come to know that if we change the SATA option to disable in BIOS then we can install the OS as required, but the problem is that this option is not available in BIOS, EVEN WE DOWNGRADED THE BIOS TO F v4.

Now i think u can analyse the situation.

    Hello Sir,
I have a compaq pressario CQ40 laptop with pre installed windows vista. Now I need to make it a dual boot machine by installing linux (preferably FC8 or FC10) in it along with vista. However, I am finding it impossible to install linux in it.
Kindly help me out with it. In case I need to install certain drivers before installing linux, then kindly let me know what are the required drivers and also where to get them.

Hrm... i'll just assume that this is the first time you've attempted anything with linux? There are vairous Linux distributions, with the Ubuntu flavour seeming to be the best one for the windows to linux switcher (IMO). I would try a live Ubuntu disc first to make sure it's what you're after, which can be downloaded here

or if you're ready to dive straight in, here is the full version that you burn to a cd and then install

Reboot compaq presario

You possibly have a system related issue, Windows or Linux can't find boot file in system folder. Usually repair utility helps, system rollback if available, or put bootable windows/linux DVD in your drive and choose repair in selection.

Need a boot disc for my 2005 desktop I wiped the hard drive with SecurErase, when I tried to reboot only COMPAC comes up on the screen.

If you have wiped the HDD then it no longer has an OS installed and you would need to purchase one if you wanted to use Windows (whatever flavour).

You can however use a Linux system which is free. There are several different versions of Linux but I recommend you try this one

Hello i have compaq evo d510 and

You need to partition your Hard drive to however much you want reserved for the Linux OS. You need to get a live CD of the Linux distribution you want and after you have partitioned your Hard drive, you need to boot from the live CD and install Linux onto the Partitioned part of the hard drive. DO NOT install Linux onto the regular partition, this will mess up your current operating system

No sound

When you go from Windows to Linux (Ubuntu) you will have problems as the hardware and drivers were made for Windows and not Linux. Ubuntu does not always automatically pick up your hardware. Here's what you can do to make it easier. The latest Ubuntu is 8.10 so you need to download the latest version. Then once that is downloaded you need to look at the top bar, there will be a red arrow asking you to download the latest patches. Take those steps as it will bring you current version and current software and may allow your sound card to work.

I want to factory reset my compaq presario 5100c computer how do i do this?

If you have the original install media that came w/ the computer boot off the main instal cd and follow the prompts to wipe the hard drive and start fresh. If not then you will have to purchase at the least a version of windows of the flavour of your choice or install linux for free.
