When I purchased new cartridges and installed them the printer automatically did an alignment but told me that it failed. It prompted me to go to the instructions and follow what was said - I did and nothing is working.

Re: HP C4180 printer - alignment failed
try to update your printer drivers or
delete the printer icon and all unnecessary printers icon in printers and faxes windows at start menu and then click add printer at printer task and then on screen wizard in adding a printer
next select if it is local or direct connect to your pc or network
if network browse the printer and then double click the work group you belong and the printer your going to connect and click next and a confirmationappear click yes.
if local click use the following in drop down menu see where you attach if it is in USB then select USB. click next in install printer software at left is the brand at the right is the model. if your printer is not on the list then select to near model of your printer and then follow on screen instruction after installation, print test to check if your printer now working.

Printer keeps trying to perform an alignment after installing a new black ink cartridge fix:
1.Unplug USB 2.Turn printer off 3.Wait 10 seconds 4.Remove paper from paper tray so printer has no paper to print on 5.Turn printer on 6.Printer messages to insert paper in paper tray 7.Press and hold “Setup” and “ Cancel” buttons and press “OK” 8.Should be good until next black ink cartridge change.
Remove both the cartridges from the printer and check the expiry dates on both cartridges, if any of the cartridge is expired then change the cartridge and check the result. If the cartridges are not expired then check the ink levels present in the cartridges from the HP Solution Center. If the ink levels are good then clean the copper contacts of the cartridges with a soft cotton cloth and power cycle the printer.
Turn the product off.
Unplug the power cord from the product.
Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the product.
Turn the product on.
Now insert the cartridges and align them, after alignment page prints then scan the page.
If it still gives alignment failed message then remove the cartridges and reset the printer and check for the result.
