Whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator relay compressor?
Hi. My 'fridge isn't cold. Everything seems to match the description
for an issue with the relay compressor. It seems to be working,
light's on, fan's on, sounds like it's getting cold, motor runs, then
clicks, turns off, repeat every three or four minutes, inside is
warm. I took the cover off and vacuumed out the vent really well,
then flipped the breaker leaving it off for a couple of minutes before
restarting. Nothing. I turned the temperature dials up down and all
around. Nothing. How do I find this magic box to try triggering
the switch? Not even Whirlpool's site has the manual
available. Best of all, it's sunday, the food's warm (just went
shopping of course!) and there is not a repair tech in town available
'til tomorrow? Please help! Just in case, the model numbers
GD2NHGXLQ00 made 08/02. Thanks!
p.s. should i just turn it off it the meantime, the fan just seems to be making it warmer?
Watch out!!! I have a Whirlpool Gold 9/2002 that caught fire. I came home and smelt a wire fire and saw smoke. I imediatley called the Fire dept and they search the entire place and couldn't find anything. Unitl one of the younger firemen said it smelt like it was coming fromt he refrigerator. I opened the bottom panel on the back of the refrigerator and The white relay switch was chard black. I have seen many other complaints on the internet for this same problem with the Gold Whirlpools. Take this issue very seriously because I got home in time.
My wife called me to the kitchen this evening because she smelled smoke. It was coming from our 2003 Whirlpool Gold Side-by-side Refrigerator.I pulled the unit out and unplugged it.I went directly to the relay on the compressor and saw black burn marks on it.How did I know to look there?I bought a 2002 Kenmore Elite Refrigerator when I lived in another house and this one also caught on fire. The compressor and relay on the Whirlpool Gold were identical to the Kenmore Elite refrigerator. On the Kenmore, the fire got hot enough to melt the pins of the compressor and it had to be replaced. This time, I got to the relay before it melted to the compressor pins. There is a huge issue with these refrigerators and they should be recalled!! If not caught, the house could have burnt down! This seems to be a very common issue on these refrigerators. My wife called me to the kitchen this evening because she smelled smoke. I had the same problem it was a motor that I had to have replaced, that was almost $400. Now the Ice Maker seems to have stopped. I had the same problem it was a motor that I had to have replaced, that was almost $400. Now the Ice Maker seems to have stopped.

Sounds like the relay switch. Light works, fan works, but is not cold. Also if you smell a burnt metal very strong smell. Relay switch must have burnt.

Many times a freezer and/or refrigeratordo not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many otherthings that can go wrong.
If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out thelast two tips.
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...
Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to starttrouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then callinga repair person to do a simple thing for you...

You probably have an issue with the compressor or components attached to the compressor (e.g.: relay, overload and capacitor (if applicable)). Contact an appliance service company.
. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on
and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to
start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload
relay.

Sounds like the overload/relay is bad . Pt# 2188831 . This is the part attached to the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires connected to it . Easily replaceable . Also , make sure the coils under the front of the refrig at the bottom , is clean of dust , lint , pet hair , etc.
I did some research online, and read that the Start Relay is most commonly the problem. My husband bought the part, (about $50) and reattached it to the side of the compressor....and was cold immediately! apparently a very common problem on these fridges.
hi thanks for the question did you clean the coils at the back by the compressor if not clean the coils its very important try that thanks the appliance doc
hi thanks for the question when you say it short cycles that's the compressor relay trying to start the compressor i would replace the relay & overload at the compressor thanks the appliance doc
Had the identical symptoms with my Whirlpool Gold GS6SHEXNB00 side-by-side refrigerator. Had a technician come on site, indicated it was the "circuit board/ timer" (Whirlpool part # 1394052). Board is accessible from behind fridge (lower left side in a white plastic housing to left of compressor).
Swapped the board out (noticed a scorched circuit on the old circuit board). Lightbulbs now work, temperature readouts also good to go.
turn it off for an hour or so and give the coils time to thaw just in case they somehow froze up. also if the frig was tilted in the wrong direction (which it doesnt sound like it was since it has food in it!!!) it could need time to let the refrigerant and oil settle back into the compressor.
where are you located (cold or warm climate)? and where is the frig located (in your home)?
