Question about Dell OptiPlex GX270 PC Desktop

Dell GX270T won't boot, makes 'ticking' sound

My Dell, a 2.80GHz, P4, 800FSB, 512K Cache has been reluctant to boot for a period of time. Pressing the 'on' button yielded simply a 'tick, tick, ticking' sound and the power-on light isamber (not green as normal).

On several occasions, by disconnecting the power cord, reconnecting and pressing 'on' button (usually did the process several times) I was able to boot up.

No more. It won't boot, yellow light on and ticking sound is all.

My son, who does 'some' computer work, disconnected the HD to determine if that was the culprit. Still the 'ticking'!

He called Dell and they suggested it could be defective RAM. He switched out with known good sticks. Still just ticking!!!

Any ideas out there about this wierdness?? I'm hoping I (an old retired guy) don't have to buy a new box. With luck someone will say 'I know what the problem is and here's how to fix it'.

    Hey Greg;

My son will give the PS a try to see if that helps. I've been 'pokin' around the internet and find Dell's had a MAJOR problem with failed capacitors that have swelled (and even burst in some cases). Seems the 'cap' manufacturer made defective capacitors that were sold to Dell. Seems like Dell is keeping it secret as there have been 'scads' of GX270 failures due to the prob.

Well old retired guy there is so many moving parts in a computer. the fans , on the processor ,the power supply, and one on the box of some. You have the cdrom , the a:/ drive and hard drive. You can unplug everyone except the power supply and it will still turn on. If the ticking still exist then its electrical snapping in the power supply. There is more than one voltage coming out of the power supply. Part of its 5 volt and part of it is 12 volt so then part of the supply could be working and another part not working. My guess is get a used power supply and it will work fine.

God Bless You Greg

it might take some time being a freeware driver solution

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

DELL OPTIPLEX WONT BOOT PAST WINDOWS LOGO

If the loading fails with an error message, try hitting F8 before the windows logo appears and from there Select "Safe Mode". If it works like that, one you're logged in Windows, perform a System Restore to an earlier point in time (when the computer worked).

He has accessed the bios and change the boot setting devices by enabling the floppy drive which you do not have.

Go Bios (F1 or F2) on first screen. and select load default setting

Also go to Boot Options and make sure 1st boot is the HDD not FDD or removable disk

Also in any menu mention of Floppy Disk make sure it is set to not installed or disabled.

keep me posted
