Question about Maytag MGR5770 Gas Kitchen Range

Oven igniters, are both suppose to be on during preheat or bake?

Maytag MGR5770....
The oven has two igniters, an upper one (usually used for broiling) and a lower one for baking. When you set the oven control panel to broil, the upper igniter works and the digital display on the control panel shows an orange upper bar, as if to signal that the brioler is on. However when you choose bake, the upper and lower bars are visible on the control panel display.

Question: when choosing "BAKE" does the oven use both upper and lower igniters?

The bottom igniter is the only one I see as active when baking. I do believe that the bottom igniter needs to be replaced, but I want to make sure that the igniter control unit is working properly. (Original problem... oven taking too long to preheat, sometimes smell gas. Lower Igniter is activating but does not glow as brightly as the upper one. I am planning to replace the lower igniter).

Question: when choosing "BAKE" does the oven use both upper and lower igniters?

... if it does, then I may have an additional problem, where the upper igniter is not operating when "bake" is selected.

    :) Thank you.

Bake ignitor is not bad on mine. Bottom ignitor works, but oven takes a long time to preheat. Broiler ignitor works if you only ask for broil, but does not come on, as it is supposed to, when in preheat mode.

My Maytag convection oven has the heating elements on the top. It doesn't matter if I use convection or not, metal, nonstick, or stone pans, or lower the temperature or cooking time, it doesn't cook/bake...

Stick a thermometer inside the oven. Compare the them inside the oven to the temp you see on the control panel; are they the same?
You must do this first. You will note a disrepancy. If the oven temp and yours do not match, that you have solved the problem.
Your oven sensor or thermostat might be at fault.

Maytag oven model mgr5770 oven hard to light and doesnt keep temp even when it does gas stops lighter still glows?

Hello,

The problem beleive it or not is that the bake ignitor is weak ,and it is not drawing the proper amprage to open the gas valve. If you have a amp meter access the wires to the bake ignitor(usually behind the storage drawer) and check for 3.3-3.6 amps when oven is set to bake by clamping the meter around ONE wire wire of ignitor make sure only one wire, either one and not both.
if amp draw less than 3.3-3.6 amps replace bake ignitor. I know it seems improbable that if the ignotor comes on that it could be the problem.Professional appliance technicians who would charge a average of $250.00 to repair your oven, have found when the ignitor comes on yet the oven won't heat that a weak ignitor is the cause 100% of the time

I hope this helps

WHen turning on the oven to bake it will not ignite a flame. I can broil and cook on top however the gas will not lite when baking. The pilot is on however the gas will not burn unless banging on the part...

Hello,
This is usually a symptom of a faulty oven safety valve. Over time, it tends to stick internally and banging on it helps unstick it. You can either continue banging on it for faster burner ignition or have it replaced. You'll need the make, model # and sometimes serial # if it's an older model, to replace the part. If you do it yourself, be sure to close the shut off valve behind the stove before you remove it. Douglas

Hi,
It is probably as simple as changing the ignitor...
The ignitor is not working right and is going bad....
have the repair man replace the ignitor, or DIY....

Maytag oven doesn't light, broiler comes on instead

On some gas ranges, the broiler comes on with the bake selection during warm up. This allows the oven to preheat much quicker. More than likely, the control pad is functioning properly and your bake igniter is bad. Igniters become weak with age and eventually go bad. Since the bake feature is used more frequently, it typically goes bad more often. The following link provides you with some guidance on oven igniters:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

Remember: just because an igniter glows, does not mean it is good. If they become weak, they will not draw the required current potential to open the gas safety valve.

If you determine the igniter to be bad, you can obtain a replacement at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and go to the "Gas Controls" heading and look for item number 14 (part number 74007498). If the igniter plug does not match the plug you have on your oven, the instructions will guide you to cut the wires and splice the ends together. There should be ceramic wire lugs that come with the igniter kit. CAUTION: Make sure you only use the ceramic (heat resistant) lugs that come with the kit. Splicing with regular wire lugs or electrical tape will melt due to the heat. Additionally, make sure you UNPLUG the appliance before replacing the igniter. Live voltage potentials are still present with the range shut off.

I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you require additional assistance.
