Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, on most Canon digital cameras, error code "18" would indicate that the lens would not retract/extend. This refers then to a mechanical fault in the lens gear assembly (bellows claw). Actual repair involves re-seating the gear and the locking plate that hold it in place, In some instances, this could be caused by lubricant that has gummed up. Below pages may be of further insights:

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Tried this with S500....and my camera is now in a million pieces...if you do this be very careful when disassembling the lens because the parts can easily break. Now the lens slider mechanism does not work at all. Its a little bit more complicated with the later models becauses some ribbon cables are saudered and easily break...plus disassembly is a bit different....but should work if you are very cautious...label all screws.. Good luck!!! If can get a hold of lens paper it is better than cotton swabs for cleaning the lenses.

What does error code 00400 mean

Moultrie told me they could not fix the camera. I removed the Lexar 512 SD card and re-ran the test. The test passed and the camera worked. I replaced the Lexar SD card with a Cannon SD card and reran the test. The test passed and the camera works. I put the Lexar SD card and got a 00400 error message. Change SD cards. It fixed the problem for me.

The lens on my Cannon SD sure shot wil not close

Lens errors are fairly common for all digital cameras. Usually it's sand (be careful at the beach) or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

E 18 problem

The E18 error happens on Canon cameras usually when the lens is jammed when extending.
The error is so (in)famous that it has it own website where you can find help and advice on how to fix it. You can view the site by clicking the link underlined in blue below:

There is also a Wikipedia entry which you may find helpful:

Hi whenever I take photoes on cannon powershot sd 500, 5.1mp the image is getting blurred and horizontal stripes appear

This looks like a processor fault, or an internal RAM fault. You should send the camera back to Canon for service.

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

Help please

I'm assuming you have a lens error which is giving you the restart message.
It is kind of misleading, but to restart the camera means to power cycle the camera or remove and reinsert the battery.
If you do have a lens error, if restarting the camera doesn't work, you'll need to get the lens fixed if to remove the error.
