Seagate FreeAgent Desk - "Drive cannot be modified"

I bought a new Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500Gig external hard drive today for Black Friday. It is not the one specifically for Mac users, but is supposed to work with Macs as well. I am a photographer and am trying to transfer over my digital photography work files and raw images from my desktop Mac to the hard drive.
I am unable to create a new file on the drive or put any of my images on it.

I am getting a notice that states that: "The drive cannot be modified."
I looked on Seagate's website and it states that I will need to reformat the drive. It suggests the user 'see answer ID: 2452'; however clicking on that option brings me to a page that doesn't explain anything about how to do this or even mentions anything about this problem.

I got a great deal on it and would really like to be able to use it soon.
Any idea on how to fix this?
I'd appreciate your thoroughness as I am not extremely knowledgeable about this subject.
Thank you,
MP

I went into Disc Utility and partitioned the whole drive for Mac OSX. After that was done, I was able to write to the drive and copy over files.

Why does my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, 1.5 TB, external hard drive USB 2.0 make a clicking sound and will not connect to my Satellite receiver?

Does the drive work with a computer? This is an important test to determine if the drive is bad, or if it is an interface problem. Check the satellite receiver instructions for using external USB devices. Many times, these types of devices do not have interfaces with drivers for external hard drives.

I am looking for a manual for FreeAgent GoFlex Desk USB 3.0. I have no idea how it works. It doesn't need fixing, I need to know how to do various tasks.

Here's a link for all the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drives support page: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=goflex-support&vgnextoid=884623db95b07210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD

I would suggest finding the quick start guide for your external hard drive and reading that first.

Thanks for using FixYa; please post back if you have any problems and I will help you further.

I have just purchased a Seagate 500GB Desktop hard drive

There is software preloaded on the disk. If you have AutoPlay turned off in your system, it won't start automatically when you connect the drive. Just go to MyComputer and open the drive and you will find a setup file there to install the backup software (I think it's called Launch.exe).
