Random files are becoming inaccessible on my WD My Book

I've had my My Book for about six months, and it's run well. I've used it mainly for storing all of my music files (I have over 12,000), although I've kept my photos on there as well.

Recently, I've run into some issues. When I attempted to sync my iPod, it said a couple files weren't available. Using some online help, I managed to pinpoint which files were problematic. There were about twenty or so, and they don't appear to have anything in common (they weren't all in the same folder, or saved at roughly the same time). I simply deleted those items out of iTunes (but not off of MyBook), and iTunes worked fine again. I don't really mind not having access to those particular songs, although obviously I'd like to have them again.

Now, it seems as time goes on, the number of files is increasing. Not dramatically, but I obviously don't want to keep losing files. I have plenty of room on my hard drive for all the files, so I'm currently copying them from My Book onto my hard drive. I've already hit 27 files that won't copy, and I've still got a ways to go.

So question time. Once the transfer is complete, what should be the next step? Should I "reformat" the Book and try again? Most of the "lost files" I do have on CD, so I can always re-rip them, and I don't mind replacing the few I have left, so that's not much of an issue.

Thanks for any help you might give here.

I have been using a MyBook network for a month and in my view they are junk. The sooner you get your files of it the fewer you will loose!

Not familiar with apple products but if this was windows I would check for virus or similar that's converting some files
Have you tried putting all files on a thumb drive and cleaning and delete the folder they were in and create a new folder

SOURCE: cannot copy large files onto my WD passport

Your drive is probably in FAT32 format.  FAT32 has a 4GB file limit that is why your 5GB movie isn't saving.  You will have to format the drive in Mac OS file format (HFS) using Disk Utility.
Unfortunately once its in Mac format the drive will not be recognized by windows PCs.  What I do is have a program called macdrive installed on my windows computers so that they can access mac format hard drives.
i hope this helps!

SOURCE: western digital my book 1tb freezing while using itunes

Some times with external USB drives you have to remove both the power and the USB cable from the drive, wait like 30 sec. then connect it back up. I know it sounds trivial but see if that helps thing. There was some forum chatter I heard a little big ago about the 1tb WD my books concerning the power supply and this type of behavior. You might want to check with WD to see if they have a recall on your power supply.

SOURCE: WD My Book-Delayed Write Failed-Can't access-Files deleting!

Hi when you buy a hard disk you do not get instructions on how to change from FATS to NTFS. Your hard drive is set to FATS by default, which limits you tranferring files up to 4GB.If you changing to NTFS does 2 things. 1.you can transfer bigger files.
2. You will lose all data on the drive so you have to save any files to another drive ect
To change to NTFS, go to Start then Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Under Storage click on Disk Management. Now find your hard drive in the list and Right-click on it and select Format. Under File System change the Answer to NTFS and leave the Allocation Unit to default.Click on Perform Quick Format if you want. click OK and confirm your OK with losing all data on the drive, and your done.

I've had my external hard drive My Book Essential for a while now and had no problems with it until now. I would usually plug it in and the pop up screens would ask what you would like to do like...

The fact that it displays a '0% used' indicator probably means that somehow the data that you have hitherto stored on your external hard drive has been erased. This might not necessarily be the case, so don't panic yet.

The first thing I would try doing is reinstalling any software that came with your WD My Book. Not many external HDDs require additional software to run properly, but if yours does, then I strongly recommend reinstalling that first. I would then try using Windows Disk Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the G: drive as a hard drive, because I have had to use disk manager when I've added additional internal hard drives to my computer. If neither of these work [or you could not find the CD your My Book came with] I would search around online for driver or software updates available for your device.

One thing that I noticed while typing my suggestion for you is that before you attempting using the back up feature on your My Book, the drive for the My Book was (G:) but after you attempted the back up process the drive is indicated as (H:). I think that what might have happened was that when you attempted backing up the My Book, it was partitioned into a storage section (G:) and a section in which the backup data is stored (H:). If you can find and access it, the (G:) drive is likely to still contain all the data that you previously assigned to it.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I sincerely hope that your problem will be resolved.

My older WD hard drive suddenly became inaccessible. I sometimes get a cyclic redundancy message and sometimes it says windows cannot access the drive. I assume I need to try data recovery? Suggestions?

This usually occurs when the drive becomes damaged or the files corrupt. You can try using thirds party disk repair software or take it in to a professional to recover.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

Open "My Computer".
If you have some other USB device (camera?) connected as the 'F:' drive, then the WD drive, when connected, will become the next-available letter, namely 'G:'.

Run a 'Check-Disk' against the WD drive, to check the integrity of the file-system.

PROBLEMS WITH MY WD BOOK

Hi, This post might be of some help/idea... http://www.fixya.com/support/t191153-device_recognized The only difference is your model uses Western Digital and not Seagate. Yours can still be recognized but Windows consider it non-formatted. First try a data recovery software and another storage medium where you can copy the files if you're successful in the recovery. Good luck and kind regards.
