Janome 9000 Needle Keeps Breaking!

I'm trying to embroider a towel. Using the P foot, but have broken 3 needles in a row! The foot is on tight, and so it the needle - and inserted correctly. I am new at using this machine, but everything's so automated - feed dog position, tension, etc - I can't imagine what might be wrong. Tried switching needle sizes up to a #90 - broke right off at the top (bent, too). They almost get stuck down in the feed dog area when this happens. Have I threaded it wrongly? Help!

I do have medium weight stabilizer underneath, but the woman I bought the machine from (as well as the place where she purchased it locally) both recommend a water-soluble on top. I am doing that.

Could it be the way I've hooped it? Not tight enough? It appeared taught enough to me....??

I think you may have to use some sort of tear away paper on top of the loops so the needle doesn't get caught, as well as stabiliser underneath. I just checked the manual for my janome and that's what it says for towelling.

Needle breaking while embroidering

Could be tension is too tight. But there are also several other possibilities, ie something is not in alignment, so the needle is hitting the presser foot, needle plate, the needle is deflecting off the fabric. You might also try a different needle brand or type (ie, embroidery, top stitch, etc.)
