We ran into the same problem today with our toaster. There was never a problem before I cleaned it--not only by sliding out the crumb drawer, but by turning it upside down to dislodge every last crumb. After that, It would not stay down when pushed down--and none of the buttons were functional.

My husband took the cover off and found that a magnet is what keeps the lever down when the toaster's on, and allows it to go back up when the toasting is done. It's an electro magnet that works only when the toaster is on. It seems that when I turned the unit upside down and rightside up again, crumbs landed on the magnet's contact plates (which are about 1/4" x 1/2") and would not allow the magnet to engage. Because the magnet wouldn't engage, the lever would not stay down, and the toaster shut off. Brush off the magnets, replace the cover and toast away!

What are top buttons for

Each bay has 3 buttons: Left button: Frozen items (Waffles, etc.)
Center button: Bagel setting ( turns off the outside elements, toasting only the insides of the bagel)
Right button: Cancel (turns off the Frozen and/or the Bagel settings and "pops up" the toast.

Green wire where does it go

If the connected end is attached to the toast holder and NOT the heating element, then this is a ground wire, and the other end should indeed connect to the case (body) of the toaster.
It may be attached with a screw (typically the screw is also green) or it may be attached to a simple metal tab (on the body) with a notch in the tab to accept/hold the wire.

If this helps, be sure to hit the "thumbs up" for me.
If not, use the "add comment" button and we'll get you sorted out.

For some reason, the mechanism to hold down the toast is not working and it keep popping up as if it is stuck on the ''cancel'' function.

When this happens it is usually due to the fact that the electronics inside the unit has failed, and will not activate the hold in relay.
Time for a new one. Repair may be an option, but probably not an ecconomic repair.

Toaster only toasts on one side

Please ensure that the "Bagel" function is not selected (LED is not lit up). The Bagel function will toast one side of the bread while only warming the other side.

I have a tefal TT550015 toast 'n' Egg and have no instructions on how to use it. Please advise

To use the egg side only, fill the measuring cup with the correct amounts of water. (One side is for boiled eggs, one is for poached eggs.) Pour the water into the basin at the bottom. For boiled- Place 1-4 eggs in the tray with the four holes. Use the sharp thing at the bottom of the measuring cup to pierce the egg shell. Place the lid over top, and hit the 'egg' button. When the light on the button goes out, remove the lid. For poached, grease the pan. Spray/ butter, whatever. DO NOT rely on the non-stick. The thick black tray for boiling eggs goes on first. With the egg in the greased pan (scrambled or whole) place the pan into the unit. There are four plastic pieces in the boiling tray to show you where it goes, the handles aligned. The round tray, with the square holes in it, can be used to warm pre-cooked meat. This is optional, and that tray goes on top. Place the lid over the top, and press 'egg'.

WARNING: this cooks by steam, and any remainder can cause burns. Be careful when removing the lid. Same goes for the product. The boiled eggs should not be touched directly.

To make an egg sandwich, load the egg side and the bread/english muffin/bagel into the toaster. Press the 'egg/toast' button BEFORE starting the toaster. The toaster will start on a timer so that the egg and toast will be done at the same time. When the toast pops up, you are good to go.

Note: there should be no water afterwards, maybe a little oil if you cooked meat. Hard water residue is easily removed with vineger and a paper towel.
