Relay burned up. Replace it. Compressor will not run until you do so, so unplug ref. I cannot see your reply due to some tech issue w/ the site, so it may be a day or so before I can reply again. Please leave feedback for me if appropriate. Thanks

Refrigerator made a growling/rumbling sound & emitted a smell similar to sulfur, but exactly like a cap gun. Still cooling fine but fan at compressor not running.

sounds like the relay on the compressor has shorted, they are quite easy to replace but un plug the fridge of course. there is a black plastic cover on the side of the comp. the relay just pulls off, if it rattles when you shake it then thats your problem, it's a cheap part.

Sears 253 freezer compressor wont run

next time send the model number.if the compressor isn't running check the start device located on the side of compressor.the easiest way to check it is to remove it from the compressor and shake it,if you hear pieces rattling around inside it the start device is bad.unplug the machine, remove the back bottom panel, with a screw driver or needlenose plyers remove the metal clip on the device, remove the cover and slide the device backwards,it slides into three pins on the compressor, when you slide it off just shake it or check it with a meter, you might of smelled something burning or the compressor might make a clicking sound like every three minutes.if it's an older machine it could have a timer in it that's stuck or a bad cold control this is why you should send the model number, most likely it will be the start device.good luck and when you get it running change out the gasket

The light is on but the refrigerator isn't working at all.

you need to send the full model number,it's in the fridge section up near the ceiling, you'll see a tag with model and serial numbers,is the compressor running or is it clicking every couple of minutes.if so the start device is probably cooked.unplug the fridge so you don't burn off the pins on the compressor where the start device slides onto.remove the back bottom cover, find the compressor and you'll see a clip, remove it and slide the cover off and then slide off the start device, shake it,you'll hear pieces rattling around inside it and also it will smell your parts store, give them the model number and they'll give you the correct device.let me know what you find

try taking the bottom panel off and vacuming all the dust on the coils. The dust may be heating up and burning. The coils are usually at the bottom of the fridge. Check to see if the fan is running also.

Arking and noisey compressor startup. can smell a burning odor after restart

sounds like a bad overload relay assy for your compressor, its attached to the side of our compressor assy if that is what making the noise heres the part number 12002784. but if its burnig and arcing enought o ruin the compressor terminals you may need a new compressor, and depending on when purchased may or may not be covered. new overload relay comes with new compressor if needed

Not freezing or cooling

There should be a small relay switch near the compressor. Sometimes dust or (ugh) a bug may get in there and block the relay from starting the compressor.

Refrigerator burning rubber smell when it tries to turn on

sounds like the relay on the compressors is getting hot and cutting the unit out, if the fridge is quite old it may well be the run windings gone short circuit in the compressor pot. The relay switches from start to run windings so may be firing the start circuit, switching over to a shorted run winding, and then getting hot and activating the thermal cutout and hence the burnig smell, plus the start and rapid shut down of the compressor.
