The most important thing that you need to know is the plug set-up. Almost all printers use a male A- male B connection. I have included a link to show you what that looks like.
http://www.paperchaseproducts.com/catalog/images/EX041264.jpg
Now the other options are quality and length. Get a cable that will reach from your computer to your printer with some slack but not too much. I usually stay under a 6 foot cord. The quality is dependant on you and your budget. The higher the quality the higher the price. The main quality selling point is less interfierance from outside sources.
Hope this helps.

We have( several years now) a HP photosmart 2575 All-in-One , we need to scan documents, it was never set up to do that ,we have misplaced the manual as to set it up to our computer. can you help

1) Make sure that you have the HP driver and full-software installed. Go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=&cc=us&product=441240& , select your OS and click Next. Then click on Driver to download it. If you installed the generic driver from the OS, uninstall it and unplug the data cable (if USB) before installing. For some of OS versions, even if you do have the full software, check the version you have, some need to be patched. All of the support for this all-in-one is available here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=&cc=us&product=441240 .

2) Place the document to scan face down on the glass or face up in a Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

Next you can scan from the computer before you can scan using the buttons on the printer. If you want to use the scan buttons, you will need the full software installed and the monitor program running. Then you need to set the button destinations in the HP Solution Center before the buttons will work. Launch the HP software (Start > All Programs > HP > HP Solution Center (some HP printers have a slightly different program but it will be in the same HP folder). Launch the scan and set the resolution and destination folders. Windows computers can also scan from the computer with Paint (File > Import from Scanner or Camera) or Windows Fax and Scan (Vista and Win7).

If you have problems, check the USB cable first. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer. Thus they fail when the printer works. Make sure that the scanner is unlocked if a lock exists.

I hope this helps.

I get a message Printer Not Connected when I try to print with my HPC6280

Jackinvero, here are some solutions you may want to try when troubleshooting this problem.
1. First off, make sure the printer/scanner is plugged in to the computer, and that it is in your Printers and Faxes list. Also, ensure that the printer is turned on, and the LED display does not indicate any errors with the printer.( the basic stuff)
2. reset the printer, by turning it off, then on again. Try to print something as a test. If it still says that, unplug the printer cable from both the area it plugs in to the computer, and the printer itself. Check for any breaks or creases in the cable. (if any are found, replace the cable). Plug the USB cable back in to the computer and printer, restart the printer, and attempt to print another page. )
3. if the above 2 options don't work, try plugging the USB cable into a different USB port on the computer. If this fails, you may need to try another USB cable, to test- if everything listed here fails- you will have to contact HP for technical support/repairs.
hope these help.

I'm getting a color line going down the page on my pictures and the quality of the picture is no good

IssueWhen you copy, fax, or scan an original, the resulting output contains vertical bands, lines, or streaks in one or more colors. When you print the original, the output is normal. Figure 1: Sample output with vertical white or black linesc01892760.gif Figure 2: Sample output with vertical colored bands or linesc01892761.gif
NOTE: This article does not apply to most PSC products, to the Photosmart C6100 or C7200 series, or to the Photosmart Premium C309a and C309c All-in-Ones.If you are using a PSC product other than the PSC 2400 or 2500 series All-in-Ones, go to Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans (c01887564) (in English). If you are using a Photosmart Premium C6100 or C7200 series All-in-One, go to Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans (c00899181) (in English). If you are using a Photosmart Premium C309a or C309c All-in-One, go to Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans (c01622189) (in English). Solution one: Reset the All-in-One If there is static interference, or loose connections with the product, this can result in bands or lines in the copy, fax, or scan output. To resolve this issue, check the product connections and reset the product.
  1. Make sure the product is powered on, and then disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the product, and then disconnect it from the computer.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable to the computer, and then reconnect it securely to the product.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and then reconnect it to the wall outlet.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the product.
  6. Press the Power button (c01892763.gif ) to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , see the next solution.
Solution two: Clean the All-in-One and print a blank copy If the scanner glass or the white underside of the lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the All-in-One. Before you begin, gather the following materials:
  • Several clean, soft, lint-free cloths
  • Mild glass cleaner
Step one: Clean the scanner glass and lid
  1. Press the Power button (c01892763.gif ) to turn off the product, and then disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Open the scanner lid. Figure 3: Open the scanner lidc01893292.gif
  3. Spray a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with mild glass cleaner.
  4. Wipe the scanner glass and the white underside of the scanner lid with the dampened cloth. Figure 4: Scanner glassc01893293.gif Figure 5: Scanner lidc01893294.gif
  5. Dry the scanner glass thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth, or chamois to prevent spotting, and then dry the white underside of the scanner lid.
  6. Close the scanner lid.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product, and then press the Power or Start button (c01892763.gif ) to turn on the product.
Step two: Make a blank copy
  1. Remove any originals from the scanner glass.
  2. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
  3. Press Start Copy Black to make a blank copy.
If the copy is clean, there is no need to continue troubleshooting. If the copy has vertical bands, lines, or streaks, there might be dust inside the product, poor internal connections, or the product might be damaged. See the next solution. Solution three: Service the All-in-One If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product. Causes
  • Static interference
  • Loose USB cable or power cord connection
  • Fingerprints, smudges, lint, or dust on the scanner glass
  • Dirt or debris on the scanner lid
  • Scratched or damaged scanner glass
  • Poor internal connections
  • Dirt or debris inside the product
  • Damaged or faulty scanner bulb or parts

I have a HP Officejet All-in- One. Fax won't go through

We have a Hewlett packard officejet t45 all-in-one. We recently bought a new computer that didn't have a LPT1 port, only usb ports. So we bought a usb cable and now it only prints. I then went on the Hewlett Packard website and did some searching and reading and found that our all-in-one printer requires a LPT1 port and cable to work properly. If that is the same with you, you can buy a LPT1 card with the port to install in your computer.
