The backlight inverter is faulty, the lamp should still be good if it powers up.

I am in North London, and a call out in Croydon from here will be expensive (with part about £100+).
If you are in Croydon better to find a repair near you or replace the monitor.
Even getting a service near to you the repair wont be below £60/£80 that is the price for a new 17" TFT.

If you go at PC World repair centre in Croidon, for example, you will have the job done for £68 plus part (Chrismas special price).
That is about £80.
An unlicenced repairman, in the best case will charge you £50 or so.

You can order a new 17" TFT from PCWB for £.82 inc., then sell on ebay for spares (£20 or so) the old screen.
See PC WORLD BUSINESS RECOMMENDS
Acer V173b

If you go to a staples near you , you can buy a new 17" for £73 :
Item Code 394010, that is roughly the price for a repair.

Yes you are right and its the inverter or the inverter coil (backlight) which is going and i think the coil because it power up for a second or two, take it to a computer repair shop they will probably be able to fix it fairly cheap if its the coil!!! I live in the uk so here is an address and phone number for you in croydon.

Hi, The problem with my Monitor is that after the

That LCD monitor uses a fluorescent backlight, and the symptom you are seeing probably means the backlight is failing. There are two possible problems:
1) Likely: The inverter board is failing. The inverter creates the high voltage needed to run the backlight and can shut down after a short time if the board is failing.
2) Less likely: The fluorescent tubes themselves are failing. This usually requires replacing the whole LCD screen, although experienced technicians can disassemble the LCD screen and change the bulbs. This is much riskier.
The best bet is to replace the whole monitor. If you are willing to take apart the monitor and try a repair, you may be able to get an inverter and fix the problem.
Sellers on eBay usually carry a lot of models of inverters and may be able to sell you one and guide you through a replacement. However, this is a moderately advanced repair.

Try another cable, or check the plug for bent pins. If they are all good, check that the monitor is set for VGA input (if it supports VGA and DVI) as it may be looking for a different input. Then replace the monitor. It's not common, but video processing circuitry can sometimes fail, and yours may have. New 17-inch LCD monitors are quite inexpensive now, so it would probably be more economical to replace this one than to try repairing it.

It's probally the inverter board that drives the backlight in your monitor is failing causing the digital board to reset. I think Acer has a 3 yr warranty. If the monitor is less than 3 years, I would call them and ask them to repair it. They will fix it for free if it less than 3 yrs old, it will only cost to you is shipping it to TX. Hope this helps.

This is what inverter board looks like:
http://www.shopjimmy.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=CTX%20PV720

Look for bad caps also, more likely to need new inverter board, warning, you can have bad lamp assembly also.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Hi we have a ctx monitor PV720A that stays on for a couple of seconds then goes black

glenn659, possible cause is bad internal switch-mode-power-supply" failure or SMPS is detecting something wrong with lcd cold-cathode-fluorescent-tube backlighting circuit, (INVERTER) and it goes into SHUTDOWN mode to try and prevent a catastrophic failure from occuring. Glenn, visit youtube, search for video clips on LCD monitor disassembly and also also research BAD Capacitors or Swollen Capacitors and also the "WHY DO LCD MONITORS FAIL PREMATURELY" Certainly your's will be in the top two causes! Did you do the flashlight test with your monitor "on" and connected to a known good PC with the WIN-desktop screen showing. Even though screen is BLACK it might still show the desktop when you hold the light about 1" from screen. Some will, some won't depends on condition of the power supply. In any case get back to me with your plan of action you intend to take after viewing YOUTUBE stuff. Bye for now. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel@aol.com

Hi...there,
The problems on the backlight inverter power supply. Open it up and check all the capacitors, it look like a tiny battery cap on the side had writing on it. (Example 1000uf 16v ) if you are lucky you can spot it right away...with a bulged on top of each caps. If not, just replaced all of the caps... Good luck!

CTX PCU monitor

A reputable computer or TV repair shop could probably fix it, but it will continue to be prone to failures due to its age. Also, the cost would likely be 70% (or more) of the cost of a new one.

I would recommend replacing it with a new one....you'd be pleased with a nice 17" LCD monitor...but if you're concerned about price...the CRT models are still a little cheaper.
