I have a 2001 sc1 saturn. efi/ohc (electronic fuel injected) sohc. about a week ago i started haveing a ticking sound from my motor. sounds like it may be the lifters. not 100% sure. but i also have oil siting next to my butterfly when i take the hose off for my air intake. im not an expert when it comes to cars. but i know this cant be good
Your engine code (DTC P0442 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected ) should not have anything to do with a ticking sound. The evaporative system keeps you from having a gas smell under the hood and in the car.
As far as ticking goes ... it could be many things. You are correct, it could be lifters. If you take a long screwdriver and with the engine running place the handle end against your ear and touch the blade end to the top of the valve cover the screwdriver will act as a stethescope. If the ticking gets a lot louder somewhere on the valve cover then yes, you have a lifter making noise. If the motor ran really low on oil, and then one or more lifters started ticking you can try running about a half quart of transmission fluid in the oil for about 15 minutes at ididle while gently changing the rpms between idle and about 2500 to see if it loosens up the lifter(s). Change the oil after you do this.
To test the PCV valve, with the engine running pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover (leave it attached to the vaccuum hose) and place the tip of your finger against the now exposed tip of the PCV valve. It should make a snapping noise and **** your finger against the opening in the valve. If it does not, then make sure the vaccuum hose does not have a leak in it. If the hose is good, shut the car off, remove the valve from the vaccuum hose, and use some carburetor spray and clean it out. I clean mine each time I change the spark plugs. If the valve is stuck or clogged this could be causing the oil pooiing problem in the air intake tube you describe from excessive crankcase pressure.
If you still have not found the ticking noise, it could also be in the lower end of the motor. This is the only "bad" place for it to be out of what I have described. If it is a lifter and the noise is not really loud, it is not dangerous to drive.

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, or won't start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too

Did you get the code that triggered the SEL? If you know that, it will be easier to diagnose your problem. You can do it without a tool on the old saturns. Just need a paperclip. :
Use a paper clip to jumper Terminal A and B of the ALDL *Assembly Line Diagnostic Link* which is above your left knee.
Terminal A is an interal ground and is the top right terminal in the
connector. Terminal B is directly adjacent and to the left of Terminal
A.
Turn the ignition to ON.
All codes are 2 digits between 11 and 99. Codes are displayed on the
SES light by flashing the light with short and long pauses to
distinguish digits of one code from digits of another. The short pause
is used between digits of the same code, long pauses are between codes.
Also, each code is flashed three times before going to the next code.
For example, the sequence of code 12 will be: flash, pause,
flash-flash, long pause, then repeat 2 times. If Code 12 is not
displayed, the self-diagnostic pogram i snot functioning properly.
If only Code 12 is displayed, no system malfunctions have been stored.
Any existing system fault codes are displayed in order from low to high, except for Code 11.
On vehicles with an automatic transaxle and on which exist stored
transaxle codes, Code 11 will be displayed last, then the SHIFT TO D2
light will begin flashing transaxle codes of flags.
When all engine codes have been displayed, Code 12 will flash again.

SOURCE: Resetting my car
It is real easy. Turn the key to the on position without starting the car.(lights on dashboard), Push on the accelerator 3 times within 5 seconds. That's it. If you are unsure, then try it twice. Good luck. Keep me posted.
SOURCE: will not start after it stalls untill about 5-10 minutes
Your problem is most likey your intake gasket. They have a problems on the SOHC engines where the intake gasket shifts & starts leaking vacuum at the #1 intake runner causing a missfire on Cylinder #1.While the engine is Idling buy some throttle plate cleaner & spray throttle cleaner down at the #1 Intake runner where the intake meets the head.If engine stalls or runs rougher that's your problem.I have replaced dozens of those gaskets for tha reason!! They have a beter design gasket through saturn parts. It has a coating on it to prevent reoccurance. Also you should check you Coolant Temp Sensor,if it's ceramic it's most likely bad.Replacement is brass from saturn.Good Luck

ok well ive done some more serching and my light is ffor sure on because of the evaporative emission control ystem (eec) but im thining it may have something to do with my positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) the here are two hoses comeing from the top of my motor. one leading to my throtle the other to my air intake but that one is actualy comeing from my injectors. now the one going to my throtle there is like a brass conection that the hose is conected to i belive when i put my mouth on that, that i should only be able to breath air through one end of it. but i have oil comeing through one of the lines.well pritty much circulating through bolth hoses (pcv and eecs) not sure if thats causeing the noises if its realy that or my lifters ticking. please again any help is always grately appreciated. its varry important that i get the problem fixed befor i leave michigan. i just got enroled into uti in glendale IL. n the car hasto last n get me there by october thankyou varry much
oh duh it is a 5speed as well
