First started dragging at start then just got worse. Looking for trouble shooting instructions in proper order

Usually answered in minutes!
Just took off belt cover, can easily turn by hand. Belt was loose and looks like too much load has worn it down. Tightened belt and started, motor is very strong, but something is too hard to turn...belt tries to slip and pulls motor down some. Any ideas?
