Cd player dont work

Is it a CD player? Are you trying to play DVDs? Does the CD player show up in device manager? (Right click "My Computer", click Properties, Hardware Tab, Device Manager. If it doesn't show up at all then the drive probably needs to be replaced.

My acer travelmate 240 wont read cd's anymore. been in device manager and on dvd/cd-rom drives it has a ! slimtype COMBO LSC - 24082K

It is a pretty common fault when drive can not read one type - cds or dvds. That means you have to replace the drive. Price of the drive is not that high so that makes no sense to try to fix it. Cheapest I guess would be eBay (from what I see right now 20 dollars including delivery) but also there are plenty of on-line stores. Just use your favorite search engine to find the drive or simply go to the closest computer repair place and tell them that you want the drive replaced.

WONT PLAY DVDS ,BUT PLAYS CDS

You need to check a few things. May seem basic, but we start with basic steps.
1) Is the drive a DVD capable drive? Not all optical drives are made to read CD's and DVD's. Earlier models only read CD's. Should either have a raised DVD symbol on the door or a sticker/painted on DVD symbol on the drive door or on the front of the drive somewhere. If so then continue. If not then you need to upgrade your drive. Easy to do on a desktop, maybe harder on a laptop (finding a drive that will fit).
2) is there any DVD player software on the computer? Most DVD players need special software to play the DVD's. If your computer did not come with a DVD and you added one later, you will need to install some software. You can try a google search to see if there are any free DVD player software out there. If you have DVD player software installed then continue.
3) Is there any conflicts in the device manager (Right click my computer, select properties, then Hardware and then Device Manager - XP instructions, if you have a different Operating system let me know) If you see a yellow exclamation point on your optical drive then you have a conflict that needs to be resolved. If all these check out then post a comment back and we will see what we can do. I would like to know what you find out.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.

Computer

From what I have found, that system should come with a DVD-RW drive by default.
  1. Check device manager, see if the drive is detected by Windows as a DVD type drive.
  2. If the drive is ID'd as a DVD drive, but will not browse a DVD movie in MY COMPUTER then there is a failure of the DVD optics of the drive and it needs to be replaced.
  3. If you can browse a DVD, but not play one, then you most likely need a DVD codec installed to read DVDs. Search google for the K-Lite Codec pack.
  4. If you are trying to burn to DVD media, ensure you have a DVD buring software installed as XP has no native DVD burn capability.

DVD rom drive

It sounds like the drive itself is faulty. Since you've reformatted, it obviously isn't a software problem. CDs and DVDs are read by two different lasers so its not uncommon for one disc not to be read yet the other is just fine which seems to be the case. A new one can be purchased for under $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100005+1036508690&name=Slim+Combo+Drive
