Question about Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer

Brother 9440cn replace toner message override

Does anyone have a "fix" to continue using a toner cartridge after the machine tells me to replace it?

Is there any possible problem to the machine if a cartridge is used until it is completely empty?

Thanks Stuart1982 for the quick reply.

I cannot see any electrical contacts for an electronic sensor, so I am thinking that there may not be an electronic detector.

There are2 circular windows, one on each side of the cartridge that can be covered by toner if the cart. is tipped on its end. Other threads on this forum talk about covering a window with black tape to fool the machine into thinking that there is enough toner.

Anyone have any ideas if the machine is damaged if toner runs out completly?

    Thanks

    oops!

This question was put into the wrong printer category. Sorry. I have repeated the question in Brother9440cn category

  • doddcomps Nov 28, 2008

Thanks again. Unfortunately, I have already replaced the old carts with new ones and disposed of the "empty" ones. At the end of the new cart's life, I will definately be trying this trick.

    found a solution:
undo the two screws at the end of the cartridge. there is a wheel and spring acting like a cam. Turn this wheel (cannot remember which way -- and you need to first take out a white geared cog wheel) which tells the printer that the cartridge is not at the end of its life

I have a Muratec MFX-1450. . . The Alarm says "Toner should be replaced". . . We replaced the toner, but it still says "Toner should be replaced". . . Is there a trick??

Well you could shake the toner cartridge, to make sure that the remaining toner has uniform coverage to the developer roller, which is the black magentic roller in the toner, which applies the toner onto the drum.

Only way to fix, if the printer uses a electronic sensor, is to actually change the toner, it can not be overridden.

It shouldnt damage the machine, it would just cause print quality problems, like white streaks down the page due to lack of toner.

place the black tape on the windows and shake the toner side to side.

Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer is saying toner life end and I just put a new cartridge in.

If you want to reset your Brother MFC 9440N machine so you no longer have the error message: Toner End of Life, do the following:

1. Open the front cover of the 7820N, that is, the cover that allows you to pull out the toner and drum, but don't pull out the drum/toner.
2. Push the button: Options (located on the left of the control pad).
3. Type: *00 on the keypad.

The Brother MFC 9440N should be reset and the Toner End of Life message should disappear. Warning, this may void your warranty and ultimately damage your machine if you are reusing or refilling your cartridges, but you should already know that. Hope this helps.

Brother MFC 9440CN Toner Life End Message... The Final Solution

Sadly, I was crushed to discover that performing this operation did not solve the problem for my accursed unit.
[Do it anyway as it will save you from these annoyingly premature warnings in future!]

Reading further, I became convinced that a reset process similar to that used to solve this problem for the Brother 2040 and 7420 models was also required here.

With nothing more to go on than responses to my emails from the good people (knuckleheads) at Brother telling me only how to install a new cartridge, I began poking around on my own 'till, after much swearing and gnashing of teeth, I figured it out:

1. With power on, open the toner access main door (You will get a "door open" message in the LCD.)
2. Hit the "Clear/Back" button and... ta-dah!!! you go right to the “Toner Reset Menu” (cue Vienna Boy's choir sounds here).
3. Using the up á Down â "Search" arrow buttons you can then scroll through reset options for each of the printer's [4] toner cartridges!
Code: B. = black; C. = cyan; M. = magenta and Y. = yellow
4. For each for these cartridges is the option to reset for low yield = S (small?) or High Yield - H
5. Using the number keypad, select option #1 (to reset each to the size you have installed.
6. Hit the "Clear/Back" button to get out of the menu, close door ad the problem is FINALLY solved.

Additional tip: you might want to try turning on the Toner Save Mode to stretch out your cartridge replacements.
Open Printers > go to the MFC 9440 icon >>> Printing Preferences...> Advanced Settings > Printer Functions > Toner Save Mode >> turn on.
Looks fine to me, though not suggested for grayscale or photo printing,.

Cheers!

The yield of the TN360 toner cartridge is approx. 2,600 pages.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Verify you installed a NEW, out of the box, genuine Brother toner cartridge (TN360/TN330).

If a toner cartridge from another machine was installed (even if there?s still toner left in the used cartridge) or a starter toner cartridge (included with the purchase of a machine) was installed, the Toner LED will stay on and the message "Toner Life End" would continue to appear on the display.

2. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover by pulling the tabs on the left and right side of the printer towards you.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner out. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the printer pressing it in securely.

h. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.

If the Toner LED is still on or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End" the printer will need service.

The printer has a one year limited exchange warranty. If the printer is in warranty, call Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) for warranty options.

If the printer is out of warranty, contact a Brother Authorized Service Center for repair by clicking on the link below:

I am changing the ink cartridge i put the new one in and it keeps saying End of life and it has a new cartridge what do i do

Here is the solution that will reset the count and allow your fully functional toner cartridge (the one the printer tells you is empty) to continue to work.

Open the front cover.
Press options button.
Press the start button.
Press + or up arrow button 10 times.
Press set button.

You have to do this with a long pause or the system will reset and you will have to start over.

Good luck.

Can a cartridge be "fixed" to continue use after "replace toner"

Yes, tthe machine shines a laser through the cartridge to tell that it is empty. However, I do not believe that there is anything that you can do once the add toner indicator has come on. The best theing to do is to avoid the add toner indicator by the means you described. I would not advise tipping to one side as that will eventually lead to uneven coverage. Instead, try turning it a few times then re-inserting it back into the machine.

I hope you find this information helpful.

It depends on the model. The 2300 series using a mechanical mirror on the cartridge itself. A tab needs to be moved the mirror slid back to home. The 2400 series & newer uses an IC that you need to replace. when you buy your toner to refill the cartridge make sure you get the IC with it. Russell

Brother 8460n - toner error

Hi, This worked for us:

The message "Toner Error" is usually caused by the drum and/or toner
cartridge not being installed properly or if the machine does not
recognize the toner. To clear this message, follow the steps listed
below:

1. Verify you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly
recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridges provided with
your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only
Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Use or attempted use
of potentially incompatible tone cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in
unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to
any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner
and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium
performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of
Genuine Brother Supplies.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge(s)
for your machine. The part numbers for your model are as follows:
NOTE: Some cartridges can look EXACTLY the same among different models
and will fit the machine even if they are not designed for use in that
model. Verify the part number before using the cartridge(s).

TN550: Toner cartridge (standard)
TN580: Toner cartridge (high yield)
DR520 = Drum unitt.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner
cartridge by following the steps listed below:

a. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

b. Remove the old drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a
drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
NOTE: Be careful not to spill the toner. If toner gets on your
clothes or hands, wipe or wash it off immediately with cold water.

c. Hold down the blue lock lever on the right and pull the toner
cartridge out of the drum unit.

d. Look at the toner cartridge and see if any parts or pieces appear to
be broken or missing, if so, the cartridge may be defective and should
be replaced.

4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum
unit. If it was damaged, use a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into
the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

7. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display
unplug the machine from the wall outlet.

8. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

9. Look inside where the drum was. On the left side wall, look for a
small, black plastic lever/actuator. A flashlight may help see it.

10. Using the palm of your hand, slide it along the left wall in and
out a few times as this may free up the actuator/lever in case it is
stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and
spring forward to operate correctly.

If the lever does not move, spring back or is missing and your machine
is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center
(ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling
1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
holidays. If the machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother
Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

If the lever moves freely and springs back to its original position
continue to Step 11.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly, close the front cover and
plug the machine in.
