Canon Powershot A80 NO CAMERA FOUND message when downloading.

I have used the Canon Powershot A80 and have never had any problems. Normally once I plug the camera in the computer automatically brings up the Zoombrowser icon and asks if I want to download pictures. I click yes. It no longer automatially brings up Zoomerbrowser. Thats not big deal. I can click on the icon myself. When I hit Browse and Download it tells me to wait a minute and then gives me a NO CAMERA FOUND message. My husband and I have checked numersous times and everything is plugged in correctly. There are definitly pictures to download. I have tried to reload the software w/the Digital Camera Solution Disk and it says the softwaer is already loaded. We have no idea what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated in getting the connection back w/the camera and the computer. The camera seems to be fine and the slot where we plug it in seems to be fine as well. Thank you !

I know this issue occurred with me when I had a service not running for WinXP OS. If you are using WinXP, check for this service, start it before connecting the camera and switching it on. Canon Camera Access Library 8

I used to be able to download ppictures from my Canon Powershot A80 onto my computer with Vista O/S, using the cord that connects the camera to the computer's USB port. It doesn't work anymore.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Windows Vista does not recognize Canon PowerShot A80

Vista requires updated drivers for most of the older cameras. Unfortunately, Canon chose not to update the drivers for many of these cameras, including the A80. BUT please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. Just make sure that you get one that's stated capable of reading a CF card:

Windows Vista can't find my camera. This is a new problem as it worked fine last winter. My old computer with Windows XP has no problem. Control Panel - Scanners and cameras shows the Canon A80.

Canon did not update the drivers for many of its older cameras for the Vista OS, the A80 included. In other words, you cannot directly download from the A80 using Vista. Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as an alternative and much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos.
