WD5000 My Book 500 GB -- I/O error cannot access

My computer recognizes the external drive, but when I click on the drive in My Computer (running right now with Windows XP) I eventually get
not accessible and I/O error.

The light flashes and I hear a fan.
The My Book was dropped which probably caused the problem.

I had exactly the same problem with a WD 500gb External HD MyBook Edition USB , eventually opened up the case removed the 500gb Caviar disk put it in an external HD Case (AC Ryan's AluBox)
and still had I/O error !!! i had serious music projects and stuff i didnt want to lose , after lots of research and looking around this program SAVED MY LIFE AND ALL OF THE STUFF IN THE HARD DISK !!!!
Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional v6.20 retail first i run the simple in-depth diagnostics then i used the EasyRecovery DataRecovery option and after about an hour of scanning started copy-pasting all my files onto another disk ! this app saved my life a special thanks to its programmers ! im John from Greece , hope this helps bro!

My WD ext hard drive will not be accessed by my computer

If the drive is new, you may need to format it. If you already have data on it, then DO NOT format it.

If it is new, you'll right click on the drive icon and click format. After the drive is formatted, you'll be able to open the folder for the drive.

Does it show the 500GB as "raw" or "unformatted" space?
If so, then "create a partition".

WD5000- I can't save files anymore to the disk drive. The file on the external drives are fine and I can access them or copy them. When I start copying files to the external drive I get a error that the...

A few things to check

1. ensure the drive is connected directly to the computer and not via a HUB

2. ensure you use the original cable that came with it (not one that looks the same)

3. remove as many other usb components as possible

4.check the power supply for the external drive if it has one

5. shut down and restart the computer

At this point you should be able to see and move files around.

If this is not the case and the drive is no longer under warranty you could try the following

remove the drive from its enclosure and mount it in a computer that has a suitable interface SATA or IDE. if you can now use the drive normally then the enclosure is at fault. If the drive cannot be used normally then the drive is at fault. If its the drive then it is either dying or dead.

Also you should ensure your antivirus is totally up to date and that you also have ANTISPYWARE software installed too and that your computer is clean from any nasty stuff.

Computer does not recognize My Book

Right click on my computer.then left click (LC) on manage. go to disk management. if you dont see your drive try removing it and plugging it back in. if it does see it RC and LC on initiallize drive. you should hear a da dum from windows when you plug in a new piece of hardware. or whenit initializesthe drive. if not you have an internal problem with the drive. the drive may be fine but some of the electronic components can fail. you can try using a different external harddrive enclosure @ 15- 30 $. Does the drive light up. fi you get it up runnig you may want to consider bacing up the data you ext. drive may be close to failing.
