The 'protect light' comes on Fender PD150 Portable Sound System

When we plug in our Fender PD150 Portable Sound System, a 'protect light' comes on and we can't power up the unit.  We tried swapping out the fuse but it didn't fix the problem.  Any ideas?

Thanks Simon for responding.  I was hoping it was something simple like a bad ground or fuse but it's looking like it is more complicated.  The warranty 'just' ended and I'm hearing sad stories about other owners of Fender Passport systems :-(

We are looking for a repair person.

    Thanks for the advice.  Cindi

Thanks Simon.  We still haven't been able to fix the Passport yet.  I just took it to our local high school electronics class.  The teacher is said to be a 'wizard'.  But...he hasn't been able to fix it yet.  If it's not too much trouble, the details would help and I'll give them to him.

    Thanks again for the help.

We have a PD250 that has served us well giging regularly for 2 years. Although yesterday the red protect light came on when we powered on the unit.  We changed the fuse, changed the cable, disconnected the speakers, all to no avail.  We live in Mexico where there are no authorized dealers in our area.  I am interested in what BKFlorida responded about fixing this yourself.  Please help we have another gig in a few days and need to get this fixed asap.  Thanks!

The protect circuit is activated by a current sensing transformer in the *input* of the power supply. If any of the subassemblies of the unit (or all of them in combination) draw excess current then the protect light will illuminate and the power supply shut down to prevent any damage to the system.

The circuitry in the power supply is fairly robust as well as fuse protected so it is unlikely that the power supply itself has failed. More than likely one of your output power transistors has been shorted and it is easy to check this yourself if you are interested in doing so.

Furthermore if you follow a few *simple* precautions you can do this safely and confidently.

Post again on this thread if you are interested and I will spew the details.

this sounds like the problem I am having. I am interested in the details you have on this.

Repaired a PD250. The energy storage inductor in the power supply is a bifilar wound toroid. It had overheated and the two windings shorted. I rewound it, and unit operates but the inductor really runs hot. Fortunately the insulation on the replacement wire seems to take the heat.

Although it would be much easier to diagnose the problem if Fender made the wiring schematic more readily available, BKFlorida's response is enough for me to fix it! Just count up how many different circuit the power supply secondary supplies, and start isolating them one at a time by disconnecting, testing, the re-connecting the circuit. When the problem goes away, you've found the defective circuit.

My old band had a similar problem with a different system and we had to return it.

Usually when it does that, it means that there is a short somewhere in the unit and the protect light is a way of preventing the system from overheating and becoming a fire hazard. We kept blowing fuses right before it finally failed.

If your out of warranty, look for electronics repair shops locally.

DO NOT attempt to repair it yourselves and there is more than enough power to stop your heart in there. It's designed to take a small electrical signal and step it up so were definitely talking LETHAL!

Hope this helps,
Simon.

The protect light generally comes on when the is a short in the speaker cabling. as a test, turn on the mixer without any speakers hooked up. If it still goes into protect mode the problem is in the mixer. Take it to your local music store and have their tech look at it. if it doesn't go into protect, check the speaker cables by plugging them in one at a time. The bad one will send it into protect.

good luck

Could a bad cable connection make a fuse blow in my fender passport 250, or cuase any problemmwith ouput from my speakers...?

A shorted speaker cable could cause this... however, what you do is to replace the fuse BUT wire a 150 Watt lamp in series with the power input... This acts as a resetable fuse for testing. If the lamp stays lit, you still have a failure.

Turn down the VIP knob and try it. This is on channel 1 for announcement voice overs overriding everything. It has a threshhold setting for adjusting that. Here is the manual for it.

These seem to be tempermental. I would look for radio frequency interference from nearby transmitter leaking into your guitar cable or mic cable that puts this on the ragged edge of feedback. DO NOT boost highs with the EQ... You can get supersonic feedback that you can't hear, but puts the amp into limiting. Any audio input can start the feedback. These amps are VERY hard to work on due to the packaging. A lot of people have smoked their units and then require repairing.

Check that the power cord is seated completely. These are hard to work on and if there is a failure in it, it is unlikely you will get it restored in time. I would suggest renting a system until you get it repaired. You need rent only a powered mixer with suitable cables as your speakers should be fine. The way the Fender Passport is packaged makes them difficult to work on.

Protection light came on then went of now i get nothing when i flip the switch to on.

Likely an overload failure caused the protect light to come on, and then the fuse blew so all power is off... Do NOT replace the fuse as you will LIKELY do additional damage to components. Take unit in for repair immediately.
Note: These units are really hard to work on due to the way they are packaged.

The protect light is the only light that comes on

Either one of the amps or the power supply has blown. The protect light means the power supply has been shut down due to overcurrent. Take unit in for repair. These are hard to work on due to packaging.

We have a Fender P-250 PA system. We get the protect light on when we turn on the system rather than the green power light. We can not get it to operate. Please advise... Gary

Likely there is either a failure in one of the power amps or the power supply. The protect means excess current is being sensed.

You need to take in for repair... these are really hard to work on due to the packaging.

Protect light comes on when power on

This indicates either one or more of the amps have a failure OR the power supply is being overloaded which is usually also caused by failure in the amplifier.

Occasionally a power supply failure causes this problem as well.

Due to the way these are packaged, they are a real pain to work on for repairing.
