When I start a cycle the washer fills up with water then stops, The on/off button flashes as does drying high heat, reduce creases and time saver. Tried unplugging for several minutes but it does not help. Is this a software or hardware problem? Machine is three years old and has been otherwise excellent.

Re: Hotpoint WD440 Machine stops after 60 seconds
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, try to fool the machine into completing a program:
run the machine as you normally would;
soon as the flashing starts, set the timer to the same time as you initially had set it;
rotate control knob to "M";
one of the flashing lights should switch off;
allow to machine to cycle itself for about 5 minutes without user intervention;
power off the washer.
Should the above be not corrective, you may need to replace the controller/logic board. In some instances, a firmware update would also be required. The EPROM would require re-flashing. Unfortunately both are not user workable.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

I believe your issue is a blocked/clogged water drain. If your unit appears to drain all of the water at the end of the cycle, you may just need to clean your filter. The machine can sense when it takes too long to drain and it flashes those particular lights to let you know what the problem is.
press and hold on off button till the display panel lights up.Then press and hold the on/off button and the start /cancel button together.You will now reset the washing machine settings.And just pick your cycle again
I had to have a tech come out for the same problem two weeks ago. They had to clean the lint collector which you cannot get to on your own. He said now that this has been done everytime I use the machine, take the clothes out and then run a rinse spin cycle.
hold the start button for 5 seconds this should clear previous program. then select drain on your dial. press start as normal and machine will drain. if this does not work the only other remedy is with help, making sure the end of the drain hose is higher than drum at all times take machine outside, lean it back at 45 degrees agaist a wall with a towel or similar covering lid to stop scratching . working from underneath loosen the large jubillee clip that connects the drum to pump drain hose to the drum. As the drum is overfull there is no recepticle large enough to fit under so just let water just flow away. Dry every thing off. make sure you don't loose ping pong ball in filter and make sure filter is clear. refitting is reverse of removal
Just had the exact same problem and think I may have solved it. even turning power off didn't solve it. I think what happened was that the programme had been interupted while drying. I tried everything to get machine to work afterwards but only the following worked - while lights are flashing put back to the same time I had set to dry (60) in my case and turned the dial to M for dry high heat light goes off after a short while - leave for 5 mins then press off. machine will make a noise for a short while then stop.
If this happens then machine should be back to normal.
this is same for both posts I guess.
