Question about GE XL1800 1100 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave appears to run all the time

I have a GE Profile over the range microwave model JVM1870. As soon as the door is closed the lights come on and sounds as if it were running, but the turn table does not turn. Also the top vent remains closed.
If I set the timer and try to run the microwave, the top vent opens as it should, but the turntable still does not move. The lights do dim a litlle more. As soon as the time is up, it just goes right back to the lights being on a bit brighter with the sound of it running.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I was wondering why the turntable wouldn't turn even when the microwave was turned on. I forced the turntable by hand since it was frozen in place. After this, the other problems have gone away. Now my only problem is that the turntable still doesn't work, so I'll look into changing the motor for it. Either way, thanks for your suggestions.

This is probably a bad primary interlock switch (bottom door switch) but there is a chance it's a bad relay or connection on the control board.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts for many brands by entering your full model number here.

There also should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Thanks for the additional information. Now I can zero in on the "FixYa" solution!

The internal cooling fan has a built-in transformer winding, and that's where the turntable motor and stirrer motor get their power.

So it sounds like your turntable motor was mechanically failing (probably a broken axle on one of the gears was jamming it) and that's also evident by the "loading" effect where the lights dim.

So you need a new turntable motor.

It probably didn't go on long enough to damage the internal cooling fan motor, but if you ever have any trouble with that fan, please don't waste any time getting it replaced.

Without the cooling fan, the magnetron will be overheated and destroyed.

My GE XL1400 over-the-range Microwave does not power on to cook. The inside light will not turn off when the door is open or closed. Unplugged and re-powered with no change....where to start?

Easy....the reason the light does not go out when the door is closed and the microwave gun is not activating...is due to your door switch not "sensing" it being closed. Sometimes there two electrical switches on the door...yours probably have one and the actuating arm...metal tab on the switch is probably bent and need to be re-bent to sense door closure. Take apart the microwave and re-bent this switch tab...it's relatively easy to find and correct. The door switch might be bad too...won't cost much. 9 times out of 10 it's a bent switch bar.

GE spacemaker profile xl 1800 moving vent will not close

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

GE microwave won't turn off

Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.
