Error 99: tthe lens contacts are dirty- get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser. Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lens’ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them. Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but it’s doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in. Erase lightly. I used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera.

Try the following diagnosis steps: -

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

SOURCE: error 99 on canon 300d

Canon's error 99 is a catch all for several things the short answer is an electronic connection. Something isn't making contact and the first place to go is to the "gold" contacts between the lens and the camera body. Make sure the camera is off and remove the lens, place the camera lens side down on a clean dust/lint free surface or put a body cap on. Take the lens and holding as vertical as possible with the gold contact points down use a soft rubber red pencil eraser to lightly clean the contacts. You can remove any rubber dust and partials with a lens cleaning cloth NOT TISSUE. Make sure the area is clean of lint and dust, place the rear lens cap on or stand the lens up on a clean dust and lint free surface. the camera is a bit more tricky as you need to clean the contacts inside the mirror box. Hold the camera as best you can face down and again use the pencil eraser to lightly clean the contacts. Holding the camera as mus as possible lens side down. This will minimize any dust, dirt or lint getting into the camera body and eventually ending up on the sensor. Remove any rubber dust with a lens cloth not tissue and don't use any liquid, don't use a puffer either all that will do is drive dust partials into the camera. Once that's done install the lens, next remove the battery and do the same cleaning trick with the battery contacts, if you have a battery grip do the same thing. Okay now check out the camera if everything is go and works then you are good to go. If not then I would suggest doing a camera firmware update, all updates can be found on the Canon web site they are free and will correct any issues your camera has with the internal programming which may also be the cause of your error 99.

Ive had my canon 300D for a few years now, and just recently its started giving me this "error 99" in the lcd screen what is the problem?

This is what the people at the canon tech support say to do for error 99

read this!! :)

The guy at tech support listened and then told me that the lens contacts were dirty and to get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser.

I did this to each of my three lenses just to be sure. Lo and behold, it worked

hope this works for you!!!! have a nice day!! :) :)

EOS 300D won't work with hot shoe anymore - I get an error 99.

Error 99 is the generic error message for something serious has gone wrong. Probably only recourse is a general service at £175 or thereabouts, but for that price of course you could buy another one from an auction site of your choice and still have change!

You will get that error when using some lenses other than Canon. A lot of the older Sigma lenses have that issue. Do you get this error when using newer Canon EOS lenses?

You need to have your Sigma lens rechipped. Contact your local Sigma representative, they should be aware of this, and will be able to tell where to take the lens to be rechipped.

This is usually a torn flexible circuit or binding aperture in the lens. It'll have to go to a repair shop for replacement. About a $80 job.

Error 99 in my Canon 300D

You're probably right about the lens. Tamron lenses have a flexible circuit that drives the aperture blades. The aperture might need to be cleaned or the flex might be worn out. Either case needs a repair shop to correct.
