Front door of Maytag MAH5500BWW front loader leaking water

Water is leaking from the bottom of the door on my my Maytag front-loading washing machine (model MAH550BWW). What are possible causes? How do I fix it? Do you know where I can get a service manual?

water is leaking out the door from the tub, not from the bottom of the washer. Not sure what you mean by checking the bottom area? Bottom of what?

  • bestfixitmom Nov 28, 2008

the water is leaking out the door- not from the bottom of the machine- the last reply was too vague in saying "check the bottom area". Bottom of what?
The model number is actually MAH5500BWW not MAH550BWW as I typed incorrectly.

thanks for the link to diagram etc- what else besides the door boot might cause the problem? I'm in process of taking off the front....

  • bestfixitmom Nov 28, 2008

thanks for the links- will check them out-

probably has had a slight leak for a while- just noticed small bit of residue on front of washer (on the panel below door) goes in a straight line from bottom of door all the way down front to floor. FYI- complete service manuals for a number of washing machines can be found very reasonably priced on e-bay. Search "washer" not "washing machine". My manual is not available from parts supplier as it has been discontinued.

The stem & seal need to be replace, the tub bearing has to be replace at the same time. This is an expensive repair it will cost you around $150.

There is a small drain hole at the bottom of the boot that is connected to a drain hose. Remove the hose and clean out to make sure that it has not become plagged. replace hose and reattach boot. Mine stoped leaking imediately.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initial suspect would be the door gasket. Normally, instructions on how to replace are included in the replacement pack. Exploded parts diagram maybe found here.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Appreciate the quick postback. Other areas you may want to explore/check would be:

    • some versions has a small drainage system that feeds a tubing right on the lower part of the gasket/seal/boot itself;

    • some of the locking clips, ring, wire may be out of position and therefore the boot is not correctly aligned.

    • the best judge would be your visual inspection. If the leak has been going on for some time, there would be telltale sign where it is originating from as there would be discoloration or marks.
    Cheers.

Check out for any crack or loose hose in the lower area.

Check the easy stuff first, fill hoses tight?- drain hose cracked?

Failing those checks, cut a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than the size of your washer. Slip the cardboard under the washer and run a short load. Look carefully at the water mark on the cardboard. The mark on the cardboard the water leak will leave, will help you tell from which side or front to back the leak is common from. This will help point you in the correct direction to look for the trouble maker.

The pipes froze and busted in my garage which cause water to burst in my Maytag Neptune front loader washer Now the water won't drain Please help

That machine has an electric water pump, The first thing I must ask is has it completely thawed out? There is a rubber hose that goes from the tub to the pump, if the water in the hose is still frozen in the hose or in the drain hose, it will not empty itself. Also the water water level switch is in the top of that hose. Another possibility, is the pump or the water level switch could be damaged. You can access the pump by taking the front panel off. That is not hard to do, requires removal of the door and a couple of other screws.

We are having a leak on the bottom of the front loader door on the wash cycle

Check the door seal. There is a boot drain on the seal that may be clogged. This drain allows the water to drain out of the seal when water gets in there. You may need to replace the seal. HEre is a link to the part you will need.

I have front loader MFW9700 Maytag washer. Water

Check the door seal for tears and the drain boot from tub to drain boot for anything that might have put a hole in like a piece of metal from an under wire bra which front loads will spin so fast that the wires come out of the bras.

Water leaks from weap hole in bottom of the plastic housing

The Maytag's have always had problems with those front door boots leaking and not draining thus leaving a bad mildew smell. What the problem probably is is that the hose that connects to the weap hole is cracked and needs replacing. I would suggest just replacing the entire boot along with the hose. The boot is a pain to replace though, it might take a tech to get it done for you. Let me know if you have any other questions and let me know if this information was helpful. Good luck.

SMELL IN WASHER MODEL #MAH5500BWW AND BLACK MOLD

If you are using a high efficiency front loader than you suffer from the same symptoms that these front loaders typically have. The infamous bad smell and mold.. This is quite common because the front loaders actually seal the wash tub area with a water proof gasket around the door and left closed, the leftover water that gasket will get musty and if left untreated, may develop mold. Home Depot sells AFFRESH tablets that you cycle thru the qwasher about once a month and that usually does the trick.. The less desirable method is to wipe the gasket area with a towel or equivalent and leave the washer door open or partially open to air dry. That's been my experience.. Hope that helps !
