Are you talking the viewfinder that you put your eye to or the LCD screen?

You just need to press the play button which is situated above the menu button and simply has a white triangle on it.

To see the scene on the LCD screen, use liveview mode.

Picture does not appear on the monitor, I must look through the view finder to see what I,m pointing at to photograph

The D40x operates as SLRs have operated for half a century, offering you an optical viewfinder with which to frame and compose your picture. The LCD is for menus, shooting information, and reviewing.

Nikon introduced the live view feature, which allows you to hold your camera so it wobbles at arms' length, with the D3 and D300, released half a year after the D40x.

While almost all current DSLRs have this capability, it was not so common five years ago when the D40x was introduced.

Hi there:
You can view pictures in the folder when connected the camera at pc monitor? but cannot take pictures or movies... the LCD stays blank?
If this answer is yes, could be a problem with the CCD image sensor, if no, your LCD display go to bad and will need replacement.

Check this interesting article about bad CCDs.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

The image will not display in the viewfinder when taking the picture. Picture does show after it is taken but can not see it when trying to take it.

You mean the LCD screen and not the viewfinder, right? That's the way the D60 works. Like other SLR cameras for over half a century, it offers a viewfinder (that's the little window at the back of the "hump") for framing and composition. The LCD screen is for review (looking at the picture AFTER you take it) and for menus. More recent DSLRs offer a LiveView capability where you use the screen for framing and composition. Nikon introduced this feater with the D3 and D300, released a year or so after the D60.
Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but there it is.

Why does or how to take pics looking threw the monitor? It shuts off fast. Is there a certain set up?

The D40x works as SLRs have worked for half a century. You view and compose through the optical viewfinder. Nikon introduced the LiveView capability into their DSLRs with the D300 and D3, introduced well after the D40x. On the D40x, the monitor is for menus, settings, and review of previously taken photos. It cannot be used for shooting as on more recent cameras.

Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but there it is.

When I want to take a photo, the monitor is blank, rather than showing what I am pointing the camera at. Last time I used it, it was ok... what has gone wrong? Thanks

If the D40 monitor showed you the image while taking the picture, there was something seriously wrong with the camera, which now appears to have fixed itself.

The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, giving you the image through the viewfinder. The LiveView capability, allowing you to use the LCD monitor like a point&shoot camera, is a relatively new development, which Nikon introduced with the D3 and D300 a year after the D40.

That's the way the D40 works. The monitor is for menus and picture review, not to show images before shooting. I have Nikon D60. The monitor will not display images, but it works for menus, etc. It says it will not display due to current settings, but i cannot find the setting to change it.

The D60 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, using the viewfinder to compose photos. Only recent dSLRs provide the Live View capability, allowing you to use the monitor for that purpose. Nikon introduced this feature with the D3 and the D300. Currently, the least-expensive Nikon with this feature is the D5000.

Nikon camera D300 mirror up/down shutter permanently up

Please check whether the mode dial is on 'Mup' or 'Lv'. If it is, then the camera is on mirror lock-up position (Mup) or LiveView mode (Lv). Mup is mirror lock-up and Lv is LiveView. It could be in Lv mode if you can see the image on the LCD, but not through the viewfinder. If it is on Mup mode, both the viewfinder and the LCD will be blank. If any of these is selected, pressing down the mode dial lock, rotate the dial to 'S' mode.

You don't. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. Only more recent dSLRs (Nikon started with the D3 and D300) have the LiveView capability that lets you handle your dSLR as a point&shoot.

The camera has a mirror lock up feature for cleaning the CCD sensor. You may have engaged it. Check your manual about this function
