The two drivers you are looking for are the modem and the soundcard : the modem is a motorola sm56 smartlink look it up on the gateway website, the soundcard you are looking for is the realtek 97 it is also on the gateway website under all downloads I had to try several unzip then burn them to a cd as I did the modems placing them in different folders so as not to confuse like components then use device manager to update drivers and all is working fine now. You donot have a conexant modem as it states under your downloads

I just bought a gateway laptop, and b4 i got it, the person had wiped out everything. oes this mean i need a disk to reinstall the windows?

It would be best to re-install Windows so you have a clean system.
There is a Windows label on the bottom of the laptopm it showa the Windows version that was installed in this laptop and the product installation code.
You can borrow a Windows installation CD that matches the Windows label from a friend to install Windows on your laptop.
After installing Windows you need to the Gateway laptop's device drivers.
You can download the device drivers for your model Gateway laptop from this WEB site. Make sure you select your model laptop and the correct Windows drivers. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

Gateway 7405gx laptop will not load windows .goes to log on screen for user . click user and loads and then shuts down saving settings. tryied in safe mode and does same thing.

There is problem on the user account, or the hard drive. Try login as administrator. If the problem still occurs you need to reformat your laptop or try the recovery disk or option of your laptop. Or try changing the hard drive. But still, you need to re-install or try the recovery option or the disk.

There is no such thing as a BIOS virus. However, there are such things are boot sector viruses. Before you reinstall XP again, wipe the hard drive completely by deleting and recreating the primary partition.

You need to go into the BIOS and change the SATA type to IDE and not AHCI. I had this same problem on my laptop. Once I switched it to IDE it installed XP no problem. I don't know if Vista or 7 work with it set to IDE mode.

I need to install drivers on an old HDD for an Asus K8V mobo.

Hi gordonal123, installing drivers through safe mode is not recommended. If you want windows to function correctly than do a fresh install of windows. Over writing the Gateway hdd will cause you more grief. Windows registry will go nuts.
Link to download the Asus K8V drivers.
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Here is what you need to do. Boot to your windows CD while using the Gateway system & hdd. Create a new partition within the free space of the Gateway hdd. (Follow windows onscreen instructions to create a new partition within the free space of hdd). (This will maintain the current windows function).
Restart windows when finished. Windows will create a second partition on the Gateway drive. Go to the Asus link above & download all the drivers for the K8V MB, onto the second partition of the Gateway hdd. Once downloaded & uncompressed into their own folders you can than boot to the windows CD & format the primary partition & install windows fresh onto the formatted partition. When finished you can install the K8V driver still located on the secondary partition. Copy & past these driver folders to your primary partition. Than use windows disk management software to erase / delete the secondary partition. (diskmgmt.msc).
When finished you'll have all the drivers for the K8V MB, no need to buy a PCI LAN card & more importantly a fully functioning windows with-out issues.

Good luck gordonal123!
Take your time.
Mike

Try installing a fresh copy of Windows XP Home and update your antivirus. Avast is a free antivirus that is robust enough to get rid most of high threat viruses.
