I had this same problem with an e250R (Rhapsody). ****YOU GET THIS MESSAGE WHEN YOU UPLOAD THE *WRONG* MODEL FIRMWARE***** The player IS NOT "bricked", the fix couldn't be easier. I called SanDisk support (1-866-726-3475) and they explained it to me. To find the CORRECT firmware for your player, just go to sandisk.com, click on "music and video players", click on the series you have (I have a e250R, so I clicked the e200 Rhapsody series), then click on your exact model number. To the right you will see "Firmware Update", click it and then download the firmware zip file. You start the player in recovery mode like you did when you effed it up with the wrong firmware, then just copy this file to your mp3 player's drive letter and then unplug the player from your PC. Reboot your SanDisk player normally. Presto; your fixed. If you cant follow these directions, then call SanDisk yourself and someone will even hold your hand through it! You paid for support when you bought the darn thing, USE IT.

What i did was connect your mp3 player to the comp in recovery mode.
-Download the firmware for the corresponding player(mine is e260r) from the sandisk website.
-Unzip this firmware.Copy the contents of this folder into the 16MB Format you get when you plugin the player.
-Plug out the player. The player will reset.
-Success.....

This is the real 100% way that mine worked.
Place the two files in SKU_E and sansa.fmt into 16 MB format.
Then just unplug it

I had a problem with my e260 starting. The screen would turn white and keep restarting. I followed the "best solution " on this site and it worked for me. I tried following suggestions on other websites and they all seemed to reinstall the firmware in recovery mode but my problem didn't change. One peculiar thing was when i clicked on the icon in my system tray it referred to my Sansa as an e250. Thanks for the help

Thankyou soo much.. got it working.. cheers

There is now a "Sansa Connect Recovery Tool" located at mp3support.sandisk.com/tools/DeviceRecoverySetup.exe I believe you need to put the player into recover mode with the "Hold/Record/Menu" buttons. Then run this recovery program. My player is completely shot and I can't even get it into recover mode now.

I have also encountered the same problem. "Load main image failed Switch to Recovery Mode" What I did was: 1. Download and install the Firmware Updater Software from SanDisk "http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downloads/firmware/SansaUpdaterInstall.exe" 2. Bring up the Sansa into recovery mode by: -Switch the Hold Switch to Locked Position -Hold (and continue to hold) the Record button -Press the menu button (may a need an extra hand) while plugging in the USB Cable to the computer 3. After the Sansa is in the Recovery Mode saying: "... Enter 2.0 MSD" (Means that it is currently in MSD) 4. Right Click on the Sansa Firmware Updater icon in the System Tray (near the clock) and select "Update Now" 5. Once the dialogue box appears, DO NOT SELECT AMERICA, but chose Japan and Update. 6. Follow it's procedures till the end. -The screen will tell you to unplug then press finish. BUT WAIT! -I press the finish button first, then right click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the System Tray and properly stopped the USB device. -After stopping (and unplugging), the Sansa's screen continues with the rebooting process and finishes the update. -It will automatically restart, but the Hold Switch is still on Lock. I must then turn off the Hold Switch and press Menu to turn on the Sansa. -So far, it seems to work. In summary, I think the "America" download site doesn't have the latest firmware to fix this problem, but the Japan site does. Next, the improper unplugging of the device may prevent the update process to complete. I've seen from other forums that people who had prematurely (improperly) stopped the updating process. This one really works tanks guys :)

Solution 2 is exactly how to get it back again. "but after you do all that it will tell you to enter the usb 2.0 MSD mode and i have no idea what that is" The drive pops open, and you can see all the files on the sansa. Hopefully you'll have a copy of all the system files from before the format... just copy them back onto the sansa and you're done.

He's absolutely right, but if this recovery mode doesnt work, then reformat the mp3 player and start from there.

Posted on Jan 23, 2007

Well mines doing the same thing and so far i've only figured out how to get it in recovery mode but that really doesn't fix anything. for the recovery mode: put the player on hold hold the record button turn the player on and plug it in to the usb port but after you do all that it will tell you to enter the usb 2.0 MSD mode and i have no idea what that is

If this happened after updating your firmware, the Sansa FAQ from here http://www.sansa.com/support/sansa_e200/faqs says try this -

03. "Load image failed" appears after updating e200 firmware Applies to the following Operating Systems:
  1. Windows XP, Vista
This error may be caused by the firmware failing to load or the file system is corrupted.
STEP 1 – Reset the player
  1. Press and hold the Power button for approximately 30 seconds.
  2. Turn the player back on.
If the error persists, proceed to steps 2 and 3.
STEP 2 – Connect the player in Recovery Mode
  1. Turn off the player.
  2. Slide the Hold/Lock switch on top of the player so an orange color is showing.
  3. Press and hold the REC button and connect the device to the computer.
  4. A message will appear on the device display screen confirming the connection and a 16MB partition will be viewable in My Computer.
  5. Release the REC button.
STEP 3 – Download and update the firmware
  1. Download the firmware from the Sansa Forum.
  2. Open the zip file
  3. Extract all the firmware files to the 16MB-FORMAT drive.

Sansa player wont turn on

To get it in recovery mode. Put the Hold switch into the lock position. Then hold REC and Power for about 10 seconds.

You need to hook up your cable after that and you can reset the firmware.
