Step one is try it on another computer. This will seperate issues....is it the drive or the USB port (hardware or software actully in both cases are possible.
Step two, if it works elsewhere, is to check under device manager, and reinstall the driver (if not embedded in the drive which most are)....both USB and the disk.
Step three is to download (again assuming it did not work) the disk diagnostics from Memorex (most drive manufacturers have a host of utilities and they may exist even for flash drives - they use them internal to their mfg operations as well). Check to see if it's good. It is possible that it just lost the embedded driver by the way in which case you need to put it back on the drive...haven't done that but assume it's possible and available.
Can give you more "stuff" to do but this will probably solve the problem....and I am guessing it died. If it did they are not expensive...and even cheaper if you really don't need 4 gb...few people do for personal and even work data.
Check at pricewatch.com (not a seller) for pricing. This site is used by GEEKS United for finding "stuff".
This gives you some options.....Tango

Tohono, sorry about the other confusing mis-interpretations of your problem. I'll try to help you understand.
First of all there is little reason for a write protect error on your drive unless you have either inadvertently set an file attribute incorrectly or a protected system file has been stored on the drive, or in some cases a virus wll write protect itself when it installs to a drive.
A simple fix for all the issues assuming you have no data you wish to save, is to format the flash drive only. Please don't format your C: partition, only the USB flash drive, okay.

Things to ponder before deleting
Rather then deleting them right away, try moving the "day the files were uploaded" to another drive. Then try accessing the files on your memorex. Do the files and folders open properly? There not corrupt? Has the memorex hdd drive recreated the folder you just moved? etc...
Once your satisfied that yes there are two copies then you could safely remove one.

Sounds like the HDD is failing or failed. Try removing side cover to your PC (Switched off and unplugged from power supply) remove the CD cable / plug it into the ext HDD (Dismantled) boot into Windows.
If the PC cannot read the drive then it is damaged with loss of all files. If you can read it, I suggest you transfer backed up files to your PC before it fails completely.
