Question about Toshiba Satellite A55-S106 Notebook

1 Answer

Modem I think I need to replace the modem hardware. I had the telephone line connected to my computer during a storm and I think I fried the modem, or the jack at least. Ever since then I cannot use my dialup modem. Do you have a step by step pictorial or something I can follow to open this thing up and replace the modem? Thank you

First, you better the driver of the modem was well installed in Device Manage. If not, re-install the driver from Toshiba site again.

second, check/replace the phone line to make sure not the cable's problem.

And if it still same, you check Toshiba web to find what modem card look like for your laptop model and how much for cost(not cheap), and you can open a small cover from the bottom of laptop, and will see a small PCB board with a wire attached(Must look like what you see from Toshiba site, make sure it is not memory chip), then carefully unplug from motherboard and wire and replaced new one if you buy. BUT I don't think it is DIY.

The cheap way is buy a PCMCIA card modem and plug in the PCMCIA slot, which every one can do it.

Good luck.

Very slow on net am using a modem

Greetings Charles,
When you say "Using a modem" that could be several different devices. Is it a Telephone Modem that is connected to a telephone line and then to your computer such as a 56k? Or a modem that is connected to a Cable or Router as a gateway? If its a old style modem over the phone line such as a US Robtics etc. then there is several things we can check. If its a Modem connected to a router as such for a Gateway router like a Linksys etc. Then let me know by just responding to this post.
Thanks
Chadman

Modem connection

From Page 68 of the CF19 Reference Manual:

Modem 68
<only for model with internal modem>
CAUTION
?? Do not use the PBX internal phone lines installed in company offices. Doing so may lead to a fire or electric shock.
?? You cannot connect the modem to the following lines.
• Interphone
• Intercoms
• ISDN
?? Be sure to connect the telephone cable into the modem port, not into the LAN port.
?? Use a surge protector since the modem may be damaged by a sudden high voltage surge that may occur in the event
of a lightning strike.
1 Open the cover and connect the telephone jack (A) to the computer
by using the telephone cable (included) (B).
?? Hold the cable so that the shape of the connector (C) matches the port, and
insert fully until it clicks.
2 Click [start] - [Control Panel] - [Printers and Other Hardware] -
[Phone and Modem Options] and change the settings as necessary.
NOTE
?? Do not enter standby or hibernation during communications.
?? To remove the cable, press and hold the lever and pull out.

This is everything about the modem.
Good Luck

Problem with not working right with dial up

Your dial-up relies on the internal modem to be working properly.

Check for your modem status using Device Manager.

If the listing for the modem has any yellow or red highlighting, then the modem software or hardware needs to be changed.
If you leave your PC plugged into a phone line, internal modems are easily destroyed by lightning storms or surges in the phone line.
If the Device Manager looks okay, then call your Internet Service Help Desk.

if you do not have a telephone port on your laptop
you will need to purchase a modem.
you can find a USB modem from newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825104006&cm_re=usb_modem_56k-_-25-104-006-_-Product
I have used and purchased this for a client and it works well.

I found a sim slot on my notebook, how can i use it?was it posible that i can use it as a modem?

The slot is used for camera memory cards such as the SD memory card. No, it cannot be used as a modem. However, there should be a jack just like the jack for your phone on the wall of your house, this is the dial-up modem connection. Simply connect it with a telephone cable to the wall from you laptop.

Dial up connection needs a modem for the authentication with a telephone number - without modem no one can work with internet .yes if you want to use your laptop wireless you can do it but to do that you should have a DSL service with a wireless router .
this is how the connections in DSL is been done
DSL(telephone line) ->modem->wireless router->computer

Hardware shutdown

Terrible storm, did that include lightning ?
If you re-installed windows, did you re-install the correct Acer drivers ?
Turn off the computer and take the battery out of the laptop over night
and then put it back together and 10 to 20% of the time, it re - boots and un-freezes the modem...
The modem has a small brain that is why u unplug the battery over night to try to get it working correctly again....
Also check for Acer drivers for that modem.....

If it still does not work then you will have to replace the modem with a usb dongal type modem like US Robotics for about 25 to 35 plus shipping....

US Robotics 56K modem w Dongle cable pcmcia USR CC1560 I hope this helped you
