My sony vaio desk top pcg-11211L screen shows operating system not found

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Instructions for installing a toshiba hard drive MK103GAS in a Sony Vaio laptop

Step 1 - Remove Screws Flip the entire laptop over and remove the battery.617_bottom.jpg
There are a total of 4 screws you need to remove as depicted in the red circles.617_unscrew.jpg
Begin removing one at a time.617_unscrew2.jpg Step 2 - Removing the Keyboard After you remove the four screws from the bottom chassis, flip the laptop over and take a look at the keyboard area.
Now look carefully at the top corners of the keyboard, there is a tiny little button that you need to push in order to release the keyboard. 617_keyboard1.jpg
Push it inwards with your screw driver or finger. 617_keyboard2.jpg
Push both the release keys while pulling the entire keyboard towards you. 617_keyboard3.jpg
Gently lift up the keyboard towards you, while flipping it over. 617_keyboard4.jpg

Step 3 - Removing the Palmrest Looking inside, you will need to remove three screws as depicted in the red circles below.617_unscrewhandrest.jpg Next, gently slide the entire palm rest chassis towards you.617_handrestremove.jpg Before you lift the palm rest, notice the delicate ribbon cable on the underside. Then lift it upwards, flipping it over. Be careful not to rip the ribbon cable that's connected!617_handsetremoved.jpgYou now have access to the hard drive!
Step 4 - Removing the Hard Drive Remove three screws from the cage holding the hard drive as depicted below in the red circles.617_unscrewthree.jpg Next, gently remove the SATA cable from the hard drive. It may require a bit of effort to pull the SATA cable from the hard drive, just try to be gentle. Note that there is tape over the SATA cable underneath the hard drive making the SATA cable more difficult to pull out.617_removesata.jpg
Be careful in this step not to rip the ribbon.

What hard drive is compatible with the sony vaio vgc-rb42g and how much do they cost

A standard configuration comes with 250 GB SATA hard drive.

You can install a higher capacity hard drive such as the one in the following link

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=301

The cost will be around $65

You say you see data on disks on your existing system, yet they appear blank when trying to install? Please try to dig a little deeper and find your setup file. Data wouldn't disappear unless your running NTFS now and the disks are FAT.

Bigger hard drive

I'm not sure if the motherboard supports SATA drives, so your best bet is getting any IDE (ATA) hard drive. It's up to you which kind you want. I've always been partial to Western Digital and Seagate.

If you are running Windows XP then you shouldn't have a problem with having a larger hard drive, I know Windows 2000 had some issues with them that required registery editing.
