    Hi James!
Thanks for trying to help me out here...
I have Windows Security Center running which has firewalls... but all the programs I use are added as exceptions.
Other than that, I am not using any anti virus software that runs automatically (I will do occasional scans).
The connection will spontaneously die and my wireless computer with a green signal in the botttom corner will have a yellow dot instead. Within about a minute it will redetect the network and automatically reconnect.
This does not happen with any other wireless connection I use (not at my University nor any friends homes,  where I mostly see D-Links)..
My roommate is using a newer computer with Windows Vista... she does not seem to have such frequent connection problems (I am on a Tablet Pc running windows XP, about 2-3 years old)
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks James!!!

    Hi James!
    a. No, it does not only happen when somebody else logs on.
    b. no, I am very close to the router, so it has nothing to do with weak signal.
    c. I don't see any firewalls that look like they would interfere in my Windows Security Center. Is there a special way in which I should be detecting firewalls?
Do you have any other ideas?
Might it have to do with the router because it does not happen to me with other routers? or is this definitly symptomatic of a setting on my computer?

    Thanks again!!!!

Thanks for your persistance James, Greatly appreciated!!

I checked the power settings and could not find anything indicating that the wifi would turn off according to battery power. And also, the internet is problematic when I am plugged in as well, so I don't think that's the issue.

The router is: Edimax IEEE 802.11g 54Mbps BR-6204Wg
    (I used a D-link elsewhere)

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello my name is james and i'm gonna try to help fix the problem, firstly i need to ask some questions to get more familiar with the problem. are you using an antivirus/firewall software? if so which one? it may be stopping all traffic for a period of 60 secs or so when it detects what might be an intrusion.please tell me exactly what happens and what actions are being performed on your end when the connection dies?

Your firewall may be attempting to keep out an intruder and inadvertently killing your connection to aid in the process, if you're using a shared Wireless Access Point or WAP there may be a conflict which is causing the problem whenever someone else logs onto the wireless access point. is this an access point that is close to you (in the same room or building) or is it an access point that you share with a group of people that is coming in from outside your immediate area? because if it is either the second scenario it may be weak signal strength in which case you'll be able to tell simply by getting closer to the access point and see if you lose your signal, if you don't lose your signal after getting closer to the access point you'll know it's the signal strength and you may need to get a stronger wireless card or see about extending the range on the one you have.

let me know
James

well Sylvia/Frayda what are the power settings for this tablet? try changing the wireless settings, under the advanced section of the power settings look for the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option if the box is checked uncheck it, because if it is set to a power saving feature that can windows to turn off the network connection. if this does not work we'll try something else! but we will fixya, no pun intended also please use these links to get a better understanding of what we're talking about as to power settings and tablets:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

and in the mean time what's the model number of the router? I'll check to see if there are any known issues with it and if so i'll let you know, if you're using a d-link as stated above they are usually a very dependable router.

thank you, I sometimes look at my persistense as a curse because I find it hard to let somethings go, once I get started I have this driving desire to see it through! but getting back to your problem Sylvia I am contacting the edimax support team to ask them about known issues and circumstances that would cause this router to drop connection or otherwise fail and just so i'll be both clear and honest i need to ask if:

    1. you have a wep or wpa key that was generated by the router installed in the wireless network connection on the tablet?

    2. to your knowledge there are no bluetooth or microwave devices operating in the area when you lose your connectivity?

    3. is your wifi card and network cable within the 802.11b/g standard i.e. 802.11b card and cat 5e cable? if your nic is 802.11g that's even better!

get back to me as I know these are common questions they are liable to ask me on your behalf.

I know this is slow and you're wanting results but i'd like to cover all the bases and yield better results!

searching the edimax website i found there is an update available for your router,

    http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail....

I can't say whether it can be a possible fix for your problem because there was no description in the update package as to what new features it provided or what faults it fixed so i'll ask them when they contact me.

Sylvia, this is a quote from Judy Chang a support team member over at edimax:

    "Hi, James:

    This seems an odd problem.

How long did your customer have the BR-6204Wg router? Did she have such problem before?
If she purchased the router for a long time ago and just recently happened the problem, I guess you can suggest her to a factory reset. Login to the router's page -> Tools -> Configuration -> Factory reset. However, by doing so, all the settings (like wireless SSID and security) will be erased. She will need to manually configured again.

If she just recently purchased the router, may I suggest you do the firmware upgrade in BR-6204Wg router.

Here is to download the firmware file v1.59
    http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail....

To find out the firmware version in the router, login to the router's page -> Status Info -> you will see the "Run Time Code version" in the right panel which is the firmware version.

    Best regards,
    Judy Chang
    Tech Support
    Edimax Computer"

I told her I would let her know of your response so let me know, James

A router is only used to connect devices together in a LAN (local area network). In order to get out to the internet you also will need a modem (cable or dsl depending on your service) You will also need to pay for service through an ISP (Internet Service Provider)

You are right, if your laptop has no issues except in your home, your laptop is not the problem. You should read the "Communication Failures" section of my tip entitled "Understanding Wireless Networks". You can read it here. You should troubleshoot this starting with the obvious... Are you in Range? Is there a device causing interference (cordless phones, other access points, microwaves)? If there are other WiFi Access Points in your range, verify that they are on a different channel than your router (you can do this with a free WiFi Scanner called "NetStumbler" or "InSSIDer"). If you follow my advice given in the article, and you still have issues, there is a possibility of the router's transmitter/receiver starting to fail.
I hope this helps,

I CONNECTED THE WIFI ROUTER TO THE CABLE MODEM AS INSTRUCTED. BUT MY MAIN COMPUTER HAS NO INTERNET NOW. WHAT CAN I DO

Most likely you will need to disconnect the power cord from your modem for 15 to 20 minutes in order to clear the MAC address of the computer that was previously connected to it.
After the modem has been unplugged from power for 15 to 20 minutes, plug it back in and it should then recognize the router as its new MAC address to assign an IP address. This will restore your access to the Internet.

My internet become very lag when playing online game

First, try to reset and reconfigure the router. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you must update the firmware of the router. After updating the firmware, it is recommended to do a hard reset. Hold the reset button at the back of the router for 20 seconds, then unplug the power cable for 20 seconds and plug it back in. That should resolve the laggy issue.
