What operating system are you using? Make sure they are both on the same network. For example if you have WinXP, click on start, (right click on your mouse button) my computer, click on properties then the computer name tab. You should see a name of your - Workgroup: (NAME??)

If you want to change the laptop or desktop to the same Workgroup you can click on the Change button and rename the Workgroup section.

Plus you can go to your control panel and choose ( Network Setup Wizard ) it will guide you through sharing files between two computers.

    Hope that helps.

    Best regards,

What you will have to do is to share the document of your laptop so that the desktop system can find it on the same ethernet connection.
The procedure if you store that document of yours in MY DOCUMENT what you will have to do is to click on the document of yours and at the left corner you will find share this document and you will follw the procedure ok it will be ok.

You need to have the data disk or a USB mass storage, copy the files of your laptop in the disk or mass storage device and then connect it with your computer and again copy and paste the files in your desktop computer. If you can't do this then get a cross cable and connect both the computers with this, you will be able to transfer the files directly to your desktop computer from your laptop.

Hi Friend, It depends that whether your router is wireless or wired. If it is a wireless router then there is no need to connect the laptop with the cable, you can use the laptop wirelessly If it is a wired router and as you said that the Desktop is already connected to the router with the cable so in that case you have to get another ethernet cable and can connect it from the router to your laptop

I want to network with my lap top, but do not know where to connect a cross over cable to on my 845PE motherboard

that motherboard doesn't have a network card integrated. You need to install an eithernet card into one of the PCI slots (white) on the motherboard. The ethernet card is then connected to the crossover cable.
Most motherboards don't but some do integrate video or ethernet or a modem, and sometimes sound, but a lot don't and you need to install these individually.

Although cable to desktop connects to internet, my router from desktop to laptop via router won't connect.

Desk top to internet is OK.
How about Destop through Router connection to Internet OK?
Assuming you want to connect wireless from Lap top to Network, need to configure correctly for wireless in Router.
If you connect Lap top to router by wire and it didn't work that mean your router is bad.

Trying to connect desk top computer and lap top computer

There is only two ways to possibly connect both the desktop and the laptop in the network. That is to purchase a router so you can connect them both or a route with a wireless and then the laptop (Which most new ones have a wireless capability installed) can connect wireless from anywhere in the home. If you already have a Cable or DSL Modem it may have a wireless capability. Otherwise you would have to get a wireless modem. Hope this helps. Bud

Cd dvd out of order

Joseph,      Unplug the computer from the wall and open the case. Make sure that the power cable and the data cable for the cd drives are plugged in.  Check both connections, motherboard and CD.  Restart the computer and go into MyComputer. Check to see if the drives are there. If they are not, Next I would go into the bios and make sure that the Bios recognizes them. Some computers you can get into Bios by tapping the delete key on power up.  I would assume that when you installed the Hard Drive, none of the CD cables were removed or changed. Try the above steps.                                                             Joe < Data Miner >

Hi sheena -Is your desk top hooked up throgh the router? If not, plug your modem into the wan port on the router. The router should have come with a couple of short cables, most likely blue and yellow. Use the blue to connect your modem to your router. You can check the manual just to be sure. Use the ethernet cable that had been connecting your desk top to your modem, and plug into one of the wired ports on the router. I imagine you'll be using wireless for your laptop. Make sure that it is on. Put the cd in your desk top and run from there. Follow the directions. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be glad to assist you further. If this solves your probleb PLEASE rate this as fixed. Remember. Need help? Just holler Sheena.
