First, check to make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements. If it does, then update your video drivers. Lastly, uninstall, then reinstall the software.

Dimmer lights installed but go out after 10 minutes?

Hi Frederick,

I'm an electrician and would like to help you solve this problem. I have several questions to ask to help narrow down the cause.

Is this switch installed in the same box as another dimmer switch?

Did you need to modify the heat sync fins to fit the switch into the box?

Was this dimmer recently installed to replace a switch or old dimmer? If so, what was there before?

How many bulbs and their correscponding wattage and type (incandescent, compact fluorescent, etc.) are being controlled by the dimmer?

Is there any non-lighting load connected (paddle fan, etc.)?

Can you provide the dimmer manufacturer's name & model of the dimmer? You said you have a "2 way" dimmer and there is no such beast - I suspect that you have a 3 way dimmer.

Without answers to the above - I suspect either an excessive heat issue due to overloading or ganging of several dimmers in one large box or improper use of the dimmer controlling a motor or other non-lighting or non-dimmable load.

Leave a comment with the answers and I can help pinpoint the problem.

Problem with fuzing dimmers

Hi Peter, I'm an electrician and I'm going to try to help you with this problem.

You're controlling just 315 watts, which is considerably less than the 600 watts which that most "garden variety" dimmers sold at Home Depot, Lowes', etc. can handle (without having to buy one designed to handle 1000 watts or more). You should review the wattage rating of the dimmer to be sure. You can find it on the box (if you still have it) or stamped somewhere on the switch itself.

What you're describing sounds like an overload issue, yet the wattage you're controlling is relatively low. Let's dig a bit deeper.

If the dimmer is located in the same switch box that has additional dimmers, then you must derate the wattage rating of ALL the dimmers. This means if you have two 600 watt dimmers, they can only control 500 watts each, if you have three dimmers, they can control 400 watts each. A Lutron chart can be found here. Any derating specified by the your dimmer's manufacturer would take over ride Lutron brand chart however. The derating is required because of the need to remove the cooling fins from the dimmer. If they are not removed in a multiple-switch box, they won't fit correctly. Of course, if the installer is breaking the cooling tabs off when it isn't needed - he has effectively reduced the wattage capacity of the dimmer. In other words, only remove the cooling fins as needed.

Next, it the type of load. I am assuming that these seven 45 watt loads are incandescent - or lamps with a filament. Types the require a ballast or starter, such as fluorescent, neon, etc. are NOT designed to be dimmed unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise. These devices present an initially much larger load on the dimmer that over time, causes the lamp and dimmer to fail.

The next part of the load issue is motors. Motors such as those found in paddle fans, etc. must never be put on a dimmer. To control any motor, a dimmer must not ever be used. Use a motor controller instead. They are designed for the loads a motor presents and prevent overheating of motors as opposed to use of a dimmer. Motor controls for fans look very similar to a dimmer switch, but often have 3 or more preset positions that click into place as opposed to being completely variable like a dimmer.

I hope this was helpful and good luck. If you have more questions, provide more information about the load you are connecting.

Installed a dimmer switch to a light. Put power back on and the light came on. Wouldn't dim however and when I turned it off it would not come back on. fuse is OK

Is the dimmer rating higher than the load? Are you trying to dim fluorescent lamps? A flourescent requires special dimmer switch.

If you over loaded or mis-wired a transistor or wire wound dimmer, you may have damaged it.

Is this a three way light circuit?
