Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Rather than backing up can I save files directly onto the h/drive

I have a 'My Book Essentials 320GB Edition 2.0 External Hard drive' and when I plug it into my laptop it automatically backs up all of my files. I purchased the external hard drive so that I could store files on there to free up space on my laptop...is there a way that I can manually add files onto the hard drive and delete from my laptop?

I have tried this...if I cut and paste the file onto the external hard drive it jsut syncs the internal and creates the file again? Is this a setting on the external hard drive? Does anyone know how to change this?

When you click on my computer it should show up as a drive letter like any other installed drive. you should be able to copy files and folders to and from the drive with cut and paste or copy & paste

I just got a new laptop and I no longer have my softward installation disk for my simpletech 320GB external hard drive. I've gone onto simpletech.com and am having trouble finding the software program. ...

If you have a new laptop, you should not need the install disk to see the drive as the drive is USB 2.0 compliant.

And no, nothing will get erased unless you erase it on purpose.

Plug the drive into you laptop (USB cable).

Plug power into to the external drive.

Turn the drive on.

It may take a minute or so but your laptop should recognize the drive. It will get assigned a drive letter (assuming you are using Windows).

I just plugged it in and can't figure out how to save files on it. Please help.

1. check to see if the drive shows in the "my computer" window as a new drive letter or USB drive. If it does then....
2. Click and drag the data to that drive or in the "files" drop down menu click on "save as" then locate the drive in the save as drop down and save your data to that drive.
You will have to have 2 widows up to do so.

I want to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive(Western my book 320G)I do not wish to purchase their auto back-up program. Can this be accomplished?

Yes it can,. Your external HDD will show up in "my Computer" as another drive. You can transfer files simply using copy and paste. (or edit -> copy files to folder) which I advise. Bear in mind that hidden, and read only files will not be copied. These files include the mailboxes in Outlook Express. So be careful. I advise making copies of all files of this kind, first.

I have a 500g external simple drive. i am getting a message that i can only read on my mac.

Copy all the data onto your Mac computer.

Take the external drive to a PC computer, and "reformat" it, using "quick format".

Take the external drive back your Mac computer,
and write all the "saved" files onto the drive.

No power to my WD 1TB

If its under warranty then get it sent back.

If its not then almost any 3.5 " external sata enclosure will do so long as it has its own power supply. and if that supply is a wall-wart then should you pooch that, they are so easy to pick up and replace.

If you need quick access to the files remove the disk and fit it to a suitable computer.
