Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

My Book 1Tb will not let me put movies on it

Every time I try to copy over a movie it gives me an error saying it cannot copy there is not enough free disk space. Seeing as there is nothing on the drive (I just bought it) I find it hard to believe that a 8 Gb movie will not fit. I haven't had any trouble with any other file types regardless of size. Please Help!!!

I have a similar problem, I can copy files up to approximately 2GB onto my brand new 1TB MyBook, but get a 'Not enough disk space....' error if I try to copy a 3GB or greater sized file.

I know exactly what your problem is. You are trying to add a file bigger than 4 GB on a fat32 external hard drive. You simply cant put something that big in there without breaking it into smaller bits. You could easily add a bunch of small files just not huge files bigger than 4GB.
Your solution would be to reformat your WD external drive to a ntfs. That can be done as easy as right clicking your external drive through my computer and highlighting "reformat". Good luck and I hope you dont forget this little thing about computers..sometimes when you get a good deal on pc hardware its for a reason :)
this is good for all hard drives including western digital

The WD MyBook 1TB (and likely the 500GB and other size drives) arrive formatted as FAT32 drives. Reformat the drive at NTFS, and it will be able to accomodate files larger than 2GB in size.

IMDB which is how the Screenplay DX receives it's movie art and info from has updated to VPI 3, this version is not supported by the a Screenplay and no update is planned from Iomega/Lenovo. The only way that I've been able to get the movie art back on is going to IMDB and downloading the movie art on a pin drive and copy it to the Screenplay. Important note when you save the movie art file, you must save it with the exact file name as your movie, this is also case sensitive example if your movie is saved as ARGO.mp4 and you save a movie art file as argo.jpg it will not work you have to save it as ARGO.jpg. It's a tedious process but it's the only solution that I've found also keep a copy of all your movie art. It may delete if you power of the system completely. I use QuickStart so the screenplay never powers down completely. Hope this helps

Can not burn movies to my Hitachi 1tb external hard drive

I copy and paste the movie file just like you would do from one folder to another,it takes a few minutes sometimes but worth it. You can cut and paste but I don't recommend it as if anything goes wrong you could lose the original.

What type of harddrive are you trying to copy to?

Is it the same hdd that you have your operating system installed in? Is it an external hdd? At the risk of asking an obvious question, are you sure you have enough free space in the hdd to copy what you want to copy?

If you're copying into another drive make sure it is formatted NTFS (right click on drive, format, check NTFS instead of FAT or FAT32). This is for a Windows environment. DO NOT DO THIS IF THIS IS THE SAME HDD THAT YOU HAVE WINDOWS INSTALLED IT. If it is the same hdd as your operating system, then the partition is already NTFS unless you're on Windows 98 or something.

Again, a little more info is needed. Hope this helped...

My ps2 won't read dvd movies. I put them in and nothing happens. even when i click the browse selection. It plays the games just fine, but doesn't seem to read the movies at all.

you need to have a modded ps2 to play pirated movies which are not official copies if you are using an original dvd copy then try keeping a weight say a small mobile charger or a small book on the ps2 if you are using the slim ps2

I have a WD 1tb external hard drive that is a few months old. I use it mostly for storing video footage of holidays, movies from friends and family or downloaded, pictures and tv shows that I have...

Try copying one episode of your tv shows to your computer's internal hard drive (lets say put it on your desktop) and see if it is the same result. By the way, what is the extension of those tv show files? are they avi, mp4 or mkv? Are the extension of the those files the same with your movie files? Normally, movie files are avi ( divx or xvid) which can be easily played by wndws media player or vlc. If it plays after copying one to your internal hard drive, then erase the one from your WD and recopy it from your internal hard drive. If that works, then just do the same on the othe tv show files. If it still the same result after copying onto your desktop, then just uninstall and reinstall vlc/divx and the codecs. Let me know if these procedures works.

External Hard Drive

If you plan to store movies on the HD, better buying a 1TB hard drive. WD Mybook is one of the best external HD.

To rip and store DVD movies into the hard disk you will need a specific software, like the ones below.

DVD Converter - convert DVD video to AVI/MPEG/DIVX files

Freeware converts DVD AVI MPEG WMV RM to MP3 or iPod Video

Movie2x Freeware DVD Converter Download

DVDx (freeware from labDV)

No space error

This is due to the file transfer limitations bound by the file format FAT32 (no files larger than 4GB and no folders that contain more than 1000 files). Try formatting the drive to NTFS.

My Book 1Tb will not let me copy movies on to it.

To transfer files larger than 4GB to the drive, the harddrive must have an NTFS File system. Unfortunately, the FAT32 File system is not capable of handling a single file larger than 4GB (to be exact, one byte less than 4GB). Follow the steps below to format the harddrive with an NTFS File system:
Warning, all data on the harddrive will be lost! Please backup the data on the harddrive before proceeding.
  1. Locate My Computer (Computer in Vista). Right-click on the harddrive and select Format.
  2. Select NTFS from the File system drop-down list.
  3. Select Quick Format as the Format option and click Start.
  4. Note: If NTFS is not an available option, close the Format window and follow steps 4-9.
  5. Right-click My Computer (Computer in Vista) and select Properties.
  6. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
  7. Expand Disk drives and right-click on the harddrive. Select Properties.
  8. Click on the Policies tab and select "Optimize for performance.”
  9. Click OK.
  10. Repeat steps 1-3.
