Mary-Ann,

Was this cd a retail cd or one you made from a blank?

If it was a retail CD and recently purchased, say in the last 30 - 90 days you should be able to exchage it at your retailer for the same title.

If it is one you made yourself, or one that is older than 90 days, we need to determine the extent of the damage.

Where did the crack occur? Label side or clear side. How deep did the crack go. Is it a surface scratch or did it crack through?

If you only have a surface scratch on the clear side, then you should be able to "Polish" it out. you can get either brass polish or rubbing compound and rubb the surface of the cd in concentric circles (Cover the WHOLE disc not just the trouble spot. for an even level) when the scratch is noticably lighter, rinse of the disc with water. Dry the disc and try it out.

If the disc has a deep scratch on the clear side, that has not gone through to the metal, you will likely need a cd repair device. You can usually find these at electronic retailers and DVD rental shops for about $25-$30 USD

If it it on the label side and you can see light through the scratch. Or if it is on the clear side and it is deep enough to reach the metal. the disc is likely beyond YOUR repair. Check it in your machine and if it reads at all, copy any and all data you need from it to the hard drive immediately(Hopefully you can get it all)

If it does not read, and there is data you MUST have on it. There are data recovery specialists, that have special CD drives and software that can extract at least SOME of the data off of even some severely compromised discs.

Thanks
Dave

  • Clean the disc. Even if a CD isn’t actually scratched or scuffed, dust, oil, and other surface contaminants can prevent it from playing properly. Thus cleaning the disc should always be your first move. Run warm water over the damaged disc to remove dust. If there is stubborn dirt or grease on the disc, gently rub it with your finger while you are washing it, and use a gentle detergent or liquid soap (with the water) or rubbing alcohol (in place of water). Any time you ‘rub or wipe a CD, you should do so by starting at or near the center of the disc and rubbing straight outward toward the edge’ to prevent further scratching. Shake the water off and let the disc air-dry (do not dry it with a towel or cloth, and don’t sun-dry it either).
  • Try to play the disc. Many times a good cleaning is all that is needed. If, however, problems persist after cleaning, try to play the disc in a different CD player. Some players handle scratches better than others; computer CD drives tend to be best.
  • Burn a new disc. If you can get the CD to work in one CD player - especially your computer’s - but not in others, try burning a new disc. The CD burner on your computer may be able to read the CD well enough to produce a perfect copy. You may wish to try this even if the CD doesn’t play correctly on the computer.
  • Locate the scratch. Actually repairing the disc will be easier if you can figure out where the offending scratch is. Visually inspect the CD’s playing surface for scratches or scuffs. Scratches that run perpendicular to the CD’s spiral - that is, those that run generally from the center to the rim - may not affect playing at all, and in any case are generally less damaging than those that roughly follow the direction of the spiral. If there are several scratches, but the CD only skips in one or two places, you may be able to approximate the location of the offending scratches based on which track skips. Keep in mind that the first track of a CD begins near the center, and the direction of play proceeds outward to the edge.
  • Polish the CD. Though counterintuitive, polishing a disc can repair a scratched CD by removing some of the outer plastic coating and thus making existing scratches shallower. A number of common household products can be used to polish the CD, but toothpaste — especially baking soda toothpaste — and Brasso are probably the most tried and true. You can also use a fine-grit polishing compound that’s used for cars or hard finishes. Apply a small amount of toothpaste (must be paste, not gel) or Brasso to a soft, clean, lint-free (old undershirt) cloth: an eyeglass-cleaning cloth works well. Gently rub the cloth on the scratch or scuff in a radial motion, start at the center and rub out to the edge (like spokes on a wheel). Do this 10 or 12 times all around the CD. Rubbing in a circular motion can cause small scratches that throw off the laser tracking system in the player. Try to focus your efforts solely on the scratch or scratches you’ve identified (if possible). Polish in this manner for a couple of minutes, reapplying Brasso or toothpaste to the cloth as necessary. Be careful not to apply much pressure, although you will still be able to feel the cloth gently scratching the CD as it polishes.
  • Remove polishing product from disc. If you used toothpaste, rinse the disc thoroughly with warm water and let dry. Make sure to remove all of the toothpaste and let the disc dry completely before trying to play it. With Brasso, wipe off excess product and let the rest dry. Then, using a clean cloth, gently wipe disc again.

Can a healthy pin oak survive removal of 2 large roots in driveway repaving?

Mary Ann, i love trees but you need to give it a bit of intensive care. Make sure the roots are not weeping to hard and give it some yummy food. A bit of well rotten compost or farm manure and plenty of water through the warmer months. It should survive with plenty of T.L.C.

What is the procedure to crack a pc game cd provided with crack?

Usually you copy the contents of the folder named 'Crack' to the folder where your game is installed. Usually something like: Program Files>EA Games>The Sims, or in your case something like Program Files>Focus Essentials>Mystery Case Files.

There will probably be a read-me included on the disc where this is explained, and maybe it states a different folder where you need to copy the files to. This changes frequently, because gamedevs try and find new ways to prevent piracy.

Ask your granddaughter to open your Facebook account on both the iPhone and on your computer. It could be you can't find the data on your computer, but as long as you can access your Facebook account, everything is on your profile in the "cloud" . Everything should come back on both, your computer and your iPhone.

My gemini cdx2400 not reading the dis

Are you saying your computer will not read a disk?

Is this a disk you made or someone made and gave to you? If so most there are times when the computer will have trouble reading them.

Try using a store purchased disk such as a music cd that you purchased. If it reads and plays it, then the drive is ok.

Click Start/My Computer and see if your CD Drive is listed as a device. If not, that's your problem.

If the CD Drive is not listed as a device, then remove the power cord, open the case and remove the two cables that plug into the cd drive then plug them back in. Then try rebooting and see if the cd drive is listed as a device in My Computer.

If the drive is still not listed, then you will need to Remove Upper and Lower Filters.

My computer is running very slow. So I ran test of my Maxtor 6Y160M0 hard drive using the computer's "PC-Doctor" software. The 'linear' test failed, giving me an error code the instructions...

the drive is going bad
Try to format the Maxtor.
NOTE: obviously backup all important data to a removable drive or CD.
You will have to reinstall windows. so before doing this, make sure that you have the cd and Product key (usually on CD case).

I have a Maytag Gemini oven and it just beeped and said it needed service with an F-1-1 code I think. Can I retrieve this code to make sure and will it hurt the oven to continue cooking at 200. Stove...

I got the manual out and after reading see that this is a function code. I will now flip the circuit breaker obviously at the box - I will attempt to clean both ovens and see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't then, I'll call service.

Does that make sense ?????????/

Thanks
