Lexmark 4550 language setting cannot change from set-up

The language that appears when setting up the lexmark 4550 appears to be japanese or something and I can't change it. I've tried resetting to factory default settings and this doesn't work either. I can't proceed with the install since I can't get it to reset to English.

I tried resetting the printer to default by trying one of the suggestions for a different lexmark model and it worked; pressing and holding the BACK and START COLOR key, followed by POWER ON worked and reset the settings back to default.

The tip shared in the first paragraph of rhong on Nov 28, 2008 was PERFECT , it is not only to press start color and back key with power button until it shuts down it is to turn the power button on while pressing the back and start color keys.. a little note comes on the screen saying "lang cleared" ...

You need to reset the printer to default settings (note: this does not affect wireless settings). Turn off the printer by pressing the power button for four seconds. Press and hold Start (green circle) and the Cancel (red X) buttons on the operator panel, then press power button to turn the printer on. Continue holding down Start and the Cancel button until Language Selection appears. Choose your preferred language. Set the country, date and time and the fax settings if you have one. Thank you for choosing Lexmark.
