You have to set up the WEP key. Open internet explorer and enter 192.168.0.1 and click on the wireless tab to set up the security key - there you can create a WEP, or WPA key - remember the key so that you cab enter it into the laptop.

How do I password protect my internet connection with my wireless router?

In order to set up a secure home network you will first need to be sure that the router is connected to a computer preferably via a network cable.
1. Open web browser of your choice.
2.go to 192.168.1.1
3.When prompted to sign in type "admin" (w/o quotes) in the username and password boxes.
4.After hitting enter you should be brought to a screen with many tabs on the top, go to the wireless tab.
5. Now go to wireless security, from here you can change the name of your network (SSID) and set up a password.
6. Go to the Security Mode box and select WEP 128bit 26 hex key.
7. The password must consist of 6-8 characters.
8. Apply the settings and you are done!

The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

If you are trying to connect the computer using a wireless connection then -
Then the password proably the wireless router's encryption key (WEP or WPA or WPA2 code). This is part of the wireless configuration.

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router's wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

I think we were disconnected with the chat session. Well, here is what you do, after you have reset the router, try connecting the laptop again to the network. It should not ask for a password this time. Please let me know. If this solved the problem, please do not forget to click the End Session button to properly close the chat and to accept the solution I provided. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a d-link 655. My daughter is home with her laptop and when she tries to connect, it asks for a password...We;ve tried all the numbers on the bottom of the router...what's the problem? Sue

If your computer is running WindowsXP, then the simplest thing is to download WirelessKeyView from CNet.com (don't just google that name and download from a random site you've never heard of)

If your D-Link is using WEP encryption, you'll see the password directly.
If it's running WPA-PSK encryption, you'll either see the password directly, or you'll see a long key that looks like random letters and numbers. Go ahead and have your daughter type that key in exactly as it's shown, and she'll be able to connect.

The other way is to connect to your D-Link configuration service and see if it displays the password for you. That's much more involved, but I can walk you through it if you want to go that route, just post back here and we'll get started.

And please remember to hit the "thumbs-up" button for me before you go!

Need a network key

Since you want to access the router setup page and get the wireelss security for your laptop you can try this:
Open a web browser like internet explorer or Netscape. Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has http://www.google.com in it. Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router. By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.1.1.
You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is blank, and the password is admin. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.
When you're already on the setup page of the router youc an go to Wireless tab and click on Wireless security and there you can find the security key that you need....

If the default password didn't work you need to reset the router by pressing the reset button for 15 seconds so it will be back to its default settings with default password which is admin.

But if you successfully log in to the router page just go to the Wireless tab and there you can find all the wireless settings of your router including the wireless security key...

Router will not reconize 3rd computer

It is possible that the router has a wireless security enabled into it. The laptop needs the security key for it to connect to the wireless network. You can check the security enabled in your router from your router's User Interface page.

To access your router's page; launch IE from a computer that is working through the router. Then on the address field, type 192.168.1.1. It will open a window asking for a username and password. The default password to get into the router's page is admin.

Then, once you're in the router's User Interface, the main page that will open is the SETUP, beside it is WIRELESS tab. Click on it, then verify the wireless network name or SSID. Whatever name configured on it, is the name the laptop should connect to.

Then, there is a subtab under the main tab WIRELESS. The sub-tab is called, Wireless Security. Click on Wireless Security tab and then look for the netwok key enabled. Take note of the key which your laptop will be neeeding.

Hope this helps!

do factory reset of configuration settings then log in with the routers default credentials. then change settings to your liking with one exception: DO NOT USE WEP!!!!! At a minimum use WPA 1 personal (with MAC filtering if you know how.) WEP can be hacked in less than 5 minutes.
