Try a "Master Reset" on your StreetPilot c550:

Power the StreetPilot off (ensure that it is not connected to external power)
Touch-and-hold your finger in the lower right corner of the Touchscreen...
Power the StreetPilot on...
Continue to hold your finger there until "Erase all user date?" appears...
Remover finger from the Touchscreen...
Touch "Yes"

Your product should still be under warranty since you just bought; I would take it back to the place I bought it or contact Garlin. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Anyone want to sell their dead Garmin C550 ?

I have a working one I need to sell. How much would you give me for it?

Pin code

Not without the unit being unlocked by having the correct PIN entered, or the unit being taken to the Security Location (the location at which the PIN was initially set). If you purchase it and send it to Garmin to be unlocked (which they can do for a fee), they will require proof of purchase or they will not return the unit to you. You might be better off avoiding that particular GPS.

There are only three options to unlock a PIN locked Garmin:

1 - Enter the correct PIN
2 - Take the unit to the Security Location (where the PIN was first entered)
3 - Send the unit back to Garmin with proof of purchase.

If you are unable to do any of these, you cannot unlock the unit. It is a security feature to prevent the from being of any use to thieves.

The Garmin C550 does not come with a PIN number set. It comes "unlocked" and you have the option of setting a PIN number, if you choose to. There is no paperwork that came with the unit telling you the PIN number. If you purchased this unit used, you can ask the previous owner if they remember the PIN. Otherwise, your options are to bring the unit back to the location at which the PIN was entered where it will automatically unlock, or send the unit back to Garmin.

I'm not sure if you are aware but there have been recent warnings that sat navs may start to fail and will stop working all together by 2010.

Are all sat-navs going to fail in 2010? Jump to Comments
sat_nav_fail.jpg?w=300&h=200 Sat-nav systems could become defunct next year, according to a report from the U.S. Government.
It reckons a lack of investment and development into the U.S. Air Force’s GPS (Global Positioning System) will cause the failure.
But the U.S. Air Force said sat-navs will carry on working as normal. So who’s right?

I’ve been meaning to buy a sat-nav for some time due to my girlfriend’s “interesting” map-reading skills.
There’s no doubt reading a map can be more rewarding, but the convenience of using a sat-nav is a welcome one.
But recent claims from the U.S. Government’s Accountability Office (GAO) concerned me slightly. It warned the 20-year-old Navstar GPS system is in urgent need of an upgrade.
The GAO criticised the U.S. Air Force Space Command for offering the service for free, and said the lack of investment meant both military and civilian systems could be affected.
Apparently the GPS system overran its budget by £562 million and the next satellite is due to go into orbit in August 2009 – almost two years behind schedule.
“It is uncertain whether the Air Force will be able to acquire new satellites in time to maintain current GPS service without interruption,” the GAO said.
But the U.S. Air Force Space Command left a comment on Twitter declaring there is nothing to worry about.
“Be assured, the issue is not whether GPS will stop working. There’s only a small risk we will not continue to exceed our performance standard.
“Since 1995, GPS has never failed to exceed performance standards,” the U.S. Air Force Space Command said.
Drivers across the world will be affected if sat-navs fail to operate in 2010.
If the satellites do go down, a new EU sat-nav system called ‘Galileo’ could be in big demand when it goes worldwide in 2013.
Until then, I’m going to put my faith in the U.S. Air Force and take the plunge with a sat-nav.

This does worry me, because I have had simliar problems with my work's sat nav, even on clear sunny days.

My sat nav spends my whole journey trying to acquire satelite, is there a communication problem or a problem with my device?

Depends on where you have the unit mounted. If in the front of a windshield, it should acquire one. If you are having problems, what is the software version? If your unit is less than version 6.5, update.

To check version, click on wrench (tools), system, about.

To update, load USB drivers (if not already done), connect Garmin, turn Garmin on, run webupdater, follow on screen prompts.

Unable to acquire satellites after a software upgrade.

Have you tried downloading the update again? It's possible it did not download correctly, If this doesn't work, it may be possible to download the previous version again.

LCD Screen Faded Out

saw this on a different forum.

I apologize for the inconvenience. After further research with our engineers, a problem has been discovered on your C550. A file has been created to stop the unit from turning off and locking up. Please download the new file from your computer to the unit. The file is attached to this email along with instructions on how to get the file into the unit.

The following procedure will update the software in your C550 series and correct the power issue you are experiencing with your Garmin C550 series

1.) Let the Garmin sit without power for at least 24-48 hours.

2.) Plug the C5xx series into the your computer (using a USB port in the back of the computer) with the cable provided with the unit.

3.) After removing the faceplate on the front of the Garmin press and release the reset button. At this time the C550 series will reset and power on.

4.) Save the attached file included in e-mail from Garmin Product Support. Save this file to the desk top on your computer. Note: This will make it easy to find.

5.) Open the My Computer window (by accessing the start menu on the bottom left of your computer screen).

6.) Locate and open the Garmin Mass Storage device.

7.) Locate the Garmin folder and open.

8.) Open the remoteSW folder.

9.) Copy the file that you have saved to the desktop and paste it into the remoteSW folder you have just opened. Make sure that none of the files contained within the remoteSW folder is highlighted, or you will not be able to save the new file.

10.) A message window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to replace the file; Select Yes.

11.) Disconnect the C550 series from the USB cable and let the unit restart. A message will appear on the screen stating "Updating PLD Software".

Note: the screen will fade out and go blank during this process. Do not be alarmed, this is part of the update procedure, and the screen will return to normal within seconds.
