We noticed that the camera needed new batteries. We did not turn the camera off while replacing the batteries. When we looked, all the photos were gone.

You can retrieve deleted pictures from memory card with steps below
1. Do not save any new file to memory card.
2. Connect your card to computer. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in My Computer.
3. Download recovery software, recommended asoftech photo recovery (simply because i was using it and it worked)
http://www.asoftech.com/apr/
4. Install and open the photo recovery program, select your memory drive, and click 'Start' button to start scanning process which will find your deleted photos.

First of all, do not save any new file to camera's memory card.

Take out memory card, and connect it to computer using a card reader. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer.
Download this memory card recovery software called asoftech photo recovery
Download memory card recovery software
Install and open asoftech photo recovery software, select the memory card, and click 'Start' button.

Well, deleted pictures can be retrieved as long as you take the right steps.
First things first - stop taking more photos (or videos) using the same camera (memory card) in case you may quite possibly ruin the chances of recovery.
Then connect the camera (memory card) to your computer which has installed a data recovery software. Check this site Digital Camera Recovery for several tested and nice programs working under Both Windows and Mac OS X.
Hope it helps, best regards!

All right! Be relaxed! You should act carefully to get back al your needed photos back:
Step1. Stop using this camera in case that any new file would rewrite your original data.
Step2. Insert this camera to your computer and prepare to restore your data.
Step3. Download a deleted photo recovery freeware to your computer and start to retrieve all your deleted contents back:
http://blog4mark.blogspot.com/2012/12/photo-recovery-after-delete.html
In fact, this freeware has ever successfully saved all the inaccessible data of my friend off from his camera. So, I believe it can also work successfully on your camera memory card, too.
Simply read more information of this freeware here:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/photo-recovery.html
Step4. Save and back up all the restored photos on a different memory card or drive in case of data recovery failure.
Good luck!

Well, I have also made the same mistake, but fortunately there are ways to recoup their losses. I learned that deleted files are still on the original place (they did not disappear) through this article: http://www.nikon-photo-recovery.com/ Best wishes!

Deleting won't make the pictures on a memory card erase permanently. Those deleted pictures are still stored on the memory card of your camera, they're just invisible or inaccessible. You can recover them with photo recovery software. But once the deleted pictures were overwritten by new data, they are gone for good.

I used a program called Tenorshare Photo Recovery for Mac and it worked.Anyway, you can download it and scan your memory card for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.By the way,it will show you the file name, type, date and size of your files and thumbnails for your pictures that it found on your card.Give it a shot!

Here is a step by step tutorial to guide you recover deleted photos from memory card.

First of all, you should stop saving any new files to your Nikon camera (or SD card) or taking new pictures.

Then find some photo recovery software from the following websites, which are able to recover deleted or formatted photos and movies from cell phone, digital camera, memory card and SD card etc.

Digital Photo Recovery for Windows

Digital Photo Recovery for Mac OS X

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Download and install the Digital Photo Recovery Software.

Step 2: Connect your memory card to your PC or Mac.

Step 3: Scan the source drive where your lost pictures located.

Step 4: Recover the lost pictures and save them to another drive instead of the source drive.

Best regards!

Yes, you can get them back...but ONLY if you have not taken any pictures after you formated the camera. There are programs out there that use data recovery to get your pictures back, but like I said, If you have taken pictures on your camera after you did the format...nothing will work.

I would search google for "file recovery" software and run that on your microSD disk, just like you would a floppy or hard disk and see if it will find anything.
