Question about Sony SDX-500V/R (sdx500vr) Tape Drive

Drive not recognized anymore

Hi, I have a Sony SDX-500V external SCSI Tape Drive and it worked fine a year ago. Since then it was sitting in storage unused and now I went to use it again and it doesnt work anymore.

Nothing changed since then...it was just sitting in the back. It powers on and everything but it just isnt recognized by the BIOS anymore. I've tried a couple of different SCSI cards.

Any idea?

Ive just bought an old sony dat drive SDT-5000 and want to use the external housing frome one I already have. Does anyone know how to set the jumpers? I can supply an image of this if it helps

supply an image (and would be great if you could supply image from old broken one and new one)

I'm a bit confused though: if you have an internal working sdt-5000 that you want to put into an external broken sdt-5000, it should be as simple as getting the enclosure open, then swapping the internal drives; i.e. external enclosures usually still use the same spec internal drive so it would just be an ide or scsi connector cable.

Yes it needs repair, I suppose the tapes are fine them selfs so they should work fine in another one, you will have to service the tape drive, you can get another tape drive and the tapes should work.

Drivers dlt

If you are looking for drivers then try http://sony.storagesupport.com/

Their website is hard to find sometimes.

http://tape-drive-repair.com/ have stock of these too if you need a repair or replacement.

These are getting old and tired these days. If you can then i suggest moving to an LTO drive where possible and again they should be able to help with that.

Tape drive is not showing up on scsi chain

The SCSI terminator may be disconnected.
If no physical terminiator, then one of the devices has the terminiation set.

Also, check the LUN (logical Unit Number) make sure each SCSI device has a unique LUN. The LUN can be set on the back via the "push button"...

Lib-152E autoloader no longer recognized after firmware update.

Try taking the dives out, connecting each one to your SCSI card and updating the firmware - wait at least 10 minutes afet Tape Tools says you can now use it again! This last bit is very important! Then, after you have done the update to each drive, replace the drives and try again.
I had the same problem with a TSL-SA500C and it woked fr me.

My Storegtek L80 can't recognize all of its tape drives

That thing required a SCSI terminator pack doesn't it.

If so, is it working properly.

I've had those things go out on me before leaving me to pull my hair out many times.

I had/have a similar problem with a SONY SDX-700C.
Emailed Sony tech support (very helpful) who suggested sending them the diagnostics from their TapeTool utility (qv). They then recommended running the cleaning tape 3 times, which seems to get it working (but the 'clean me' light still comes on every 7-10 backups). Hope this helps.

Vista has issues re drivers for older stuff The best you can do is seek out an older machine[a friends] and get the stuff off onto CD.
