My wife and I are renting a house. The landlord told us that the water heater was recently replaced. The hot water smells pretty bad. The landlord says that the fowl smell is due to the anode rod in the...

Hi. Your landlord is correct. Anode rod can produce rotten-egg smell. Ask him if he can replace the "sacrificial" anode rod with "Power" anode rod or zinc/aluminum rod to get rid of the smell. However, you need to decide whether you tolerate the bad smell produced by anode rod or the minimal toxin produced by zinc/aluminum rod.

You can also try to drain/clean the tank first then add peroxide treatment and see if the smell goes away. If you do this method, the smell is more likely to come back if you go on vacation and left the heater unused for several days.

This article explains it better: Why Does My Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs (scroll down to page 2)

Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks.

I have a quebb master multi fuel fire/stove it has a top flue pipe fitted how can i gain access to the flue to enable chimney sweeping

Hi Davebingj, It is quit simple to solve this problem. Inside your Quebb is a removable roof. You can lift up the roof a small bit, fold it together and pull it out of the front door. Then you have full acces to the flue pipe at the end of the stove. With the sweeping gear, which can bent easily, you can sweep the chimney very good because the sod coming out is staying inside the stove and doesn't sweep aroun the room. Hope this will help. If not give me an mail at: marbert2@eircom.net Hubert.

How can a Jenn-Air down draft stove be vented out the roof ?

Yes , its much more labor intense but it can be done by venting it up through the wall then through the attic over to the side vents. Make sure to get flexable duct to pull up through the wall.

Water and debris in flue liner of Jotul Stove

Hi,
You should have a swept T connector at the base, with the sweep going from the stove upwards, but the other end of the T going into a removable cap - or very short length of pipe. If you only have a standard bend - replace it with the T.

This is actually normal for wood burners. In an unlined chimney, the lighter "tar" fractions from the wood would soak into the brickwork, and show through the wall in a few years. In a lined system - they have to go somewhere, and usually condense inside the flue - running back down to the base.
The "chinese hat" style cap is actually very good for everything except sideways hail.

Sorry - but it's the nature of the fuel. It is possible to use a clay based absorbent at the base - Cat litter is actually fine.

Do i need to line the chimney to install a stove?

Hello chrisbaker,
In many cases you do however the regulations vary by town and state so your best bet is to speak with your local building inspector for the right direction on this. If you fail to comply to the local requirements and had a fire, your insurance would have an out and not pay you.. The risk of doing this without official approval is too great.. Hope that helps..

Rick

the chimney pipe most be the same sides all the way out , it can not begin big and then small as it goes out. that's the problem with, your wood burning stove. it can be small and then big but not the other way around.
