I'm new to cameras and just received this one as a gift. I'm a little confused because the image doesn't show up on the screen while before you take the picture, or during taking the picture. It does however allow me to review the picture on the screen AFTER i've taken it. All other digital cameras I've had, allow you to see the picture you are about to take on the screen, before you take it. I'm not sure if something is wrong with the camera, or if this is how this particular camera works.
any help would be appreciated!
Welcome to the world of Digital SLRs. There is nothing wrong with the camera. This is how an slr camera works. you don't get to compose the image on the display, you do it through the view finder. you then get to see the image a short time after it's taken. the duration can be changed in the settings. you then press the right arrow button. one above dustbin on left. to see all the pictures you've take.

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS .
Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not
possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or
re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after
the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a
language that is different from the actual language setting.

Zooming is done from the lens on a DSLR, assuming you have a zoom lens on the camera. For example, if your camera came with the 18-55mm lens, you should see the numbers 18, 24, 35 and 55 on the lens barrel with a white index line next to one of the numbers. Turn the barrel to move a different number next to the index line. 18mm is wide angle, 55mm is 'zoomed in'.
This could happen if you're using flash and your shutter speed is set too high. If you're not set to Program or Auto mode, try changing to Program mode and see if that solves your problem. Otherwise, it sounds like a sensor issue. Call Canon support - I've found them helpful. Check the website for phone number.
The EOS Digital Rebel, EOS Digital Rebel XT and EOS Digital Rebel XTi do not support stamping the date and time on the image.
It is not possible to record the date and time as part of the image at
the time the picture is taken. However, the date and time is captured
in the EXIF information of the image at the point of capture. It is
possible to print the image with the date and time via printing
software. Please see the documentation for the software package that
you use for printing images for the proper procedure.
