Question about Dell PowerEdge 2450 Server

1 Answer

Hardware issue My power light on the front of the console is blinking yellow indicating some sort of hardware/software issue. it is not software because i have formatting the hds are number of times. I was wondering if anyone has encountered this flashing yellow light and knew of any methods to pinpoint the problem. i have two of these servers, both are flashing yellow. i have tried swapping processors, RAM, NIC cards. In my mind all thats left are either the motherboards or RAID cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Hardware issue

Hi Drew, Sorry it took so long to answer this but somehow it got by me unnoticed. The flashing power LED typically means a power related issue. One of the great things about Dell equipment is they supply lots of diagnostic help. If you don?t have the original diagnostic disk you can download the software from this link. This utility is usually pretty good at finding hardware issues and is the first place to start. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate the posting.

System health is critical. Red light flashing and system won't coming on

There is a critical system component hardware failure of some kind.

There is a green blinking canister next to the power reset button and next to it is an orange light with an exclamation point. What is this indicating?-

Its an information / error led . It says server hardware has encountered an error. Find device that has error and replace it if required .

You can see a similar orange color on device that has error .

Check these parts for orange color .

I have ibm 226 server it is working properly but ther is orange light glowing wht is the reason

Welcome to fixya

Ibm server glows orange light if the server met with some hardware issue. Now our job is to find which part has the issue. For that remove the side cover and check on which hardware the orange light glows. Server should be powered on to see orange light. Once found , refix the part . Check if that solves the issue. If the orange light still there. You need to replace the part

I have a blue vertical flashing light showing just above the Dell emblem. In the past there has been a solid light. I have checked on OpenManager which indicates all is well but I do not like unexplained...

Great thanks,

That's just a system indicator flash. Solid blue means on and normal, blinking means someone either turned on the system indicator in the management software or bumped the indicator switch on the back of the server. This was designed to make easier transitions from back to front when working with multiple servers in a rack. To turn the indicator off, just go to the back of the server and find the Ethernet and usb ports that are together. If the usb is the bottom and Ethernet port is the top then just to the right you should see a small blue blinking light and a button, pushing the button wil turn the blinking off.

Again, no worries this is just a "locator beacon" not an error message, if the light ever blinks yellow then you have an issue.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Yellow light on back, we get nothing on screen at power up.

Well you have said that back panel indicator stays Yellow (Amber it should be). I assume you are mentioning the PSU indicator (Power Supply Unit). If the PSU indicator turned on it means that PSU has shut down due to an Internal Protection event and needs Service Attention. If you have configured ALOM it will be much easier to detect the error. They will be logged in syslog. It will generate an Automatic mail as well.
Its better to run Sun Management Center and Hardware Diagnostic Suite to detect, avoid and manage such situation.
However if the Front Bezel Indicator is on (Service Indicator - Yellow) means that a Problem is Detected and needs the Attention of a Service Personnel.
Its not possible to detect an error remotely but it should be a misconfiguration (during usage) or a hardware failure.
Have you been using it or is it the firs time? If so you haven't powered the system on in the proper manner.
Its better if you can read these two important publications. Link 1 Link 2 You will be able to see and identify what when wrong or what you have done wrong. You can use built in tools as well to detect errors during post.
Administration Guide is located here.
Please rate the answer if it helps you to overcome the issue. Feel free to contact again.
Thanks for using Fixya!

System will power on for about 3 seconds and then shut down and the blue indicator light on front is flashing

your poweredge has detected a hardware fault. If it is under warranty contact Dell. If it is out of warranty, you might carefully open the unit, and locate the fault diagnostic leds. They should be lit indicating the code for the fault condition/part.

Its not booting and the Leds VRM and NMI are with amber color

VRM and NMI lights lit usually indicate an issue with CPU #2's VRM which can be replaced. Also check 5 lights on back middle of system. If VRM light is lit here remove CPU 2 and VRM and reboot system. If system boots, this was the issue...
